Mitchell Sweeps NECC Weekly Baseball Honors

ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Three members of the Mitchell College baseball team were recognized by the New England Collegiate Conference on Monday.

Junior Kyle Hartenstein was named NECC Player of the Week for the second time this season (March 6). Classmate Eddie Santiago was tabbed NECC Pitcher of the Week, also for the second time this spring (March 20). Freshman Brody Adams rounded out the honors and was selected as NECC Rookie of the Week for the first time in his career.

The trio helped the Mariners to a 3-0 record last week that included wins over Becker College, Amherst College and Daniel Webster College. Mitchell also extended its winning streak to a season-high nine games.

Hartenstein, a second baseman, led the Mariners in batting (.643), RBI (8) and runs scored (9) last week and had multiple hits and multiple RBI in all three games. He went 3-for-4 with a double, homer and three RBI in a 17-1 win over Becker. After a two-hit, two-RBI performance in a non-conference win over Amherst, he went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a triple and three RBI in a 21-3 victory over Daniel Webster. Hartenstein slugged 1.214 for the week and had an on-base percentage of .706.

Santiago went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA last week to lead the Mariners to conference wins over Becker and Daniel Webster. The junior left-hander threw a combined 11.0 shutout innings and struck out 15 while walking three. He fanned nine over 6.0 innings of work against Becker and allowed only two hits, and against Daniel Webster he went 5.0 innings and struck out six.

Adams batted .375 with one RBI and two walks last week. The rookie shortstop was thrust into action as a sub at Amherst, and he made his first career start against Daniel Webster and went 3-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored. He also played flawless defense in the field and didn't commit an error in seven chances.

Mitchell (17-6 overall, 6-1 NECC) will next play at Salve Regina University on Wednesday, April 12 at 3:30 p.m.
