Baseball's Rally Falls Short at Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Mitchell College baseball team saw its ninth-inning rally come up short, as the Mariners dropped a 7-6 decision at Salve Regina University on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action.

Mitchell, which saw its nine-game winning streak come to an end, trailed 7-4 heading into the ninth. The Mariners plated two runs in the frame and had the bases loaded with only one out before Salve reliever Josh Monson worked out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts.

Steven Gonzalez went 2-for-5 with a double and a triple and drove in three runs to lead the Mariners.

The Seahawks broke the game open in the bottom of the third inning. Stephen Cirella flied out to right field to score Colton Eremian, and Brody Santilli doubled to score Christian Vargas. Hunter Sleeper then reached first and advanced to second on an error which scored Santilli, and finally John Militano doubled to drive in the fourth and final run of the inning for the Seahawks who went from down 2-1 to leading 5-2.

Five different pitchers saw action for the Seahawks. Freshman righty Zach Dionne got the win in 4.0 innings of action, allowing two runs and striking out two as well.

Bryton Ferris took the loss for the Mariners. He allowed five runs on six hits in 3.0 innings of work.

Mitchell (17-7 overall) will next play at Elms College on Thursday, April 13 at 8 p.m.
