NEW LONDON, Conn. – Mitchell College junior Domenico Santiago was one of five men's basketball players named to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week, as announced by the popular web site late Monday night.
The site recognizes the top performances in the nation at each of the five positions from the previous week. Santiago becomes just the second Mitchell player to earn the distinction, joining Joshua Ford (December 2013).
Santiago averaged team highs of 29.0 points and 15.5 rebounds per game last week as the Mariners went 2-0 in NECC play. He netted 22 of his game-high 32 points in the second half in a win over Newbury College, shooting 13-for-15 from the floor while grabbing a game-high 15 rebounds. He also had 26 points, 16 rebounds, three assists, one steal and a block in a win over Becker College earlier in the week. He shot 23-for-32 (72 percent) from the floor for the week and also went 12-for-13 (92 percent) from the free throw line.
Santiago also earned New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Week honors for the second time this season (January 15) earlier on Monday. The 6-5 center has started and played in 18 games this year and leads the Mariners in both scoring (18.9 ppg) and rebounding (10.1 rpg).
Santiago recently reached a career milestone, netting his 1,000th career point in a road game against Lesley University on January 20. He became the fourth Mitchell men's basketball player to reach the plateau in the college's Division III era. In three seasons he has amassed 1,063 points over 68 games (15.6 ppg).
Mitchell (10-9 overall, 6-2 NECC) will next host Elms College on Wednesday, January 31 at 6 p.m.
