NEW LONDON, Conn. – Mitchell College slugged its way to 23-0 and 19-3 wins over Pine Manor College on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference softball action at Alumni Field.
The Mariners combined for 39 hits over the pair of shortened games, both of which ended via mercy rule in the fifth inning. Suzanne Vachon went 7-for-7 with two doubles, a triple and eight RBI to pace the offense.
Alex Lopez and Maliah Pabellon each hit their first home run of the season in the doubleheader. Lopez, who finished with five hits and six RBI, went deep in the opener. Pabellon's long ball came in the nightcap, one of her three hits on the day.
Taylor Duchesneau pitched a one-hit shutout to even her record at 3-3 on the year. She retired the first 12 batters she faced—including the first nine via strikeout—and took a perfect game into the fifth. She finished with a career-high 12 strikeouts and didn't issue a walk.
Vachon picked up the win in the second game, allowing three runs on five hits while fanning five. She improved to 4-1 on the season.
Mitchell (7-4 overall) will next host New England College on Saturday, March 30 at 1 p.m.
