Recap From the 2013 Athletics Award Banquet

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College Department of
Athletics honored its student-athletes at the annual end of the
year banquet last Thursday at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
All 15 Mitchell athletics programs were represented and over 175
student-athletes attended the event, which revisited the highlights
from the 2012-13 season. Several awards were also presented during
the evening, though two of the major awards will be
announced at the Senior Banquet on Friday, May 17.
Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society
The 2013 induction class of the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society was
also recognized. Drew Castagna (men's cross country), Jeff
Dowling (baseball), Chris Joy (men's lacrosse), Alexa Litwak
(women's tennis), Kenneth Olszewski (baseball), Breanna Poirier
(women's cross country), David Sabilia (men's lacrosse), Zachary
Simmons (men's soccer, men's tennis) and Taylor Zaldivar (men's
golf) were all inducted.
The mission of Chi Alpha Sigma is to bring honor and recognition to
deserving student-athletes, their families, teams, athletic
departments and colleges. To be considered for induction
student-athletes must be a junior with a 3.4 cumulative GPA,
possess good moral character and must earn a letter in a varsity
sport.
Sportsmanship Award
Presented to a member of each team who demonstrates the true
meaning of sportsmanship.

Michael Jenkins Award – For the Love of the
Game Award: Blaze Ianetti
This award is given each year to a baseball player who, through
determination and love for the game, has overcome life’s
adversities and has become a member of the Mitchell College
Baseball Team. It is given in memory of Michael T. Jenkins II, who
died in a car accident in June of 1995. Michael attended Mitchell
from 1994-1995 and was a member of the baseball team in the spring
of 1995.
Top Male & Female Scholar Athlete
The award goes to the sophomore, junior or senior male/female
athlete who has completed two seasons of competition with the
highest cumulative GPA through December 2012.
Rocco Devona, Men's Tennis (3.86 GPA, business administration)
Arianna Thomas, Women's Volleyball (3.95 GPA, business
administration)
Top Freshman Male & Female Athlete
The award goes to the freshman male/female athlete who has the
highest cumulative GPA through December 2012.
Zack Rocheleau, Men's Soccer (3.92 GPA, criminal justice)
Diamond Thomas, Women's Soccer & Basketball (3.80 GPA, criminal
justice)
Scholar Athletes
Mitchell College Athletics established the Scholar Athlete Program
in 2006. The program is designed to recognize the academic
achievements of our student-athletes who achieve a grade point
average of 3.0 or above. This year 96 student-athletes earned the
honor.
