Bio

Travis Beausoleil is entering his 12th season as head baseball coach at Mitchell College in 2022-23. During his tenure he has posted 273 victories, won six New England Collegiate Conference championships and guided the Mariners to six NCAA Championship regional appearances.

Beausoleil has turned Mitchell into one of the top teams in New England. The Mariners, who boast the highest winning percentage in the region over the past eight years, have won NECC titles and earned NCAA berths in 2022, 2021, 2018, 2016, 2015 and 2014.

Last season saw Mitchell win 31 games while securing the program's eighth NECC title and seventh NCAA appearance. The Mariners enjoyed a 10-game winning streak during the regular season and entered the NECC Championship as the second seed, where Beausoleil's crew upended top-seeded New England College twice in the title round to earn the league crown for a second straight season. As the fourth seed in the Annville (Pa.) Regional, the Mariners picked up a win over host Lebanon Valley College but dropped a pair of games against top-25 programs in Rowan University and Washington & Jefferson College.

In 2021 the Mariners overcame the challenges of the pandemic to finish 26-9 overall. Mitchell went 14-2 in league action and reeled off 11 straight wins, culminating in 15-2 victory over Elms College in the NECC title game. Beausoleil's club earned the fourth seed in the Auburn (N.Y.) Regional of the NCAA Championship and picked up a win over Merchant Marine Academy before bowing out to SUNY Cortland.

Mitchell also took home plenty of individual hardware in 2021. The Mariners led the NECC with 10 all-conference selections and produced the Player and Pitcher of the Year. Beausoleil was also tabbed NECC Coach of the Year for the third time in his career. Five players went on to earn all-region honors, with outfielder Dougie DelaCruz nabbing Mitchell's second All-America selection in a four-year span.

In 2019 the Mariners set the program record for wins (34) and produced winning streaks of 10 and 19 games, the latter of which was the longest in school history. Mitchell placed 10 players on all-conference teams and swept all four major awards, including NECC Player, Pitcher and Rookie of the Year.

In 2018 Mitchell posted a 31-10 record that included the program's sixth NECC title. The Mariners won a NCAA regional game for the third time in five years, a 9-3 vicotry over Suffolk University in Harwich, Mass. A record-breaking 10 players earned all-conference distinction, and two seniors were selected to represent Mitchell at the NEIBA Senior All-Star Game.

In 2017 the Mariners finished with 29 wins and produced the first ABCA/Rawlings All-American in school history. Six players were honored by the NECC while two received regional recognition.

The 2016 season (28-11 overall) culminated in a third straight NECC Championship for Beausoleil and the program. The Mariners made their fourth NCAA appearance and won a regional game against host Eastern Connecticut State University by a 3-2 final. A total of seven players earned conference recognition while two received regional recognition.

Beausoleil took the Mariners to new heights in 2015 as the team ranked fourth in the country in winning percentage (.821) and set the then-program record for wins (32). Mitchell went 16-2 in NECC play and captured its second straight NECC Championship, earning the right to represent the conference in the NCAA Championship. Beausoleil was named NECC Coach of the Year and placed six players on the all-conference first team.

In 2014 Beausoleil led the Mariners to a breakout season that included a then-school record 24 wins, a NECC Championship and the program's first-ever victory in the NCAA Championship. Mitchell tied for first place in the NECC regular season with a 12-6 record and powered past Becker College in the tournament to claim the league title. In the NCAA Championship, eighth-seeded Mitchell produced the upset of the New England Regionals with a 4-3 win over top-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University in 11 innings. The win was also the school's first in any NCAA postseason setting.

In 2013, Mitchell enjoyed a winning season that included a 15-3 record in NECC play. Mitchell tied for first place in the regular season standings and advanced to the title round of the NECC Championship, falling one win shy of earning a NCAA berth. Beausoleil's squad also received a berth into the ECAC Division III New England Championship for the first time in program history.

Beausoleil has proven to be a strong recruiter, more than doubling the roster size since taking over the program. With quantity has also come quality, as a total of 68 players have earned all-conference recognition under his tutelage. The Mariners have produced four of the last five NECC Player of the Year honorees, as well as the NECC Pitcher of the Year in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2019 and 2021 and the NECC Rookie of the Year in 2013, 2019 and 2022.

In addition to recruiting, Beausoleil has used the offseason to expand his coaching horizons. In 2016 he returned for his second season on the coaching staff of the Chatham Anglers in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League, serving as an assistant under John Schiffner. In the summer of 2012, Beausoleil served as an assistant coach with the DC Grays of the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League. He was the lead assistant for head coach Arlan Freeman (Lynn University) and worked primarily with the hitters and infielders while serving as third base coach.

Beausoleil's baseball knowledge has been gleaned from some of the top coaches in the state. He served as a member of the support staff for the University of Connecticut baseball team, a nationally-ranked program that advanced to the NCAA Super Regional in 2011. At UConn he worked alongside head coach Jim Penders and (former University of Hartford head coach) Justin Blood. He also played for Roger Bidwell at UConn Avery Point and for John Schiffner at Plainfield High School.

"Travis is very well prepared to be a head coach, and Mitchell College is going to be rewarded multiple times over for making this hire," said Penders in August 2011. "He's a fantastic young coach who is extremely bright and has unbelievable energy. He knows how to communicate with the players. He has such a passion for the game and a desire to coach and educate young people."

Beausoleil began his collegiate playing career at UConn Avery Point where he was a two-time All-New England shortstop. He was the New England Region 21 Conference Player of the Year in 2007 and also garnered All-America second team honors. He helped the Pointers to two conference championships before completing his career at North Carolina Wesleyan College, where he was a two-year starter at second base and a captain in final season.

A graduate of Plainfield High School, Beausoleil was a four-time ECC All-Conference infielder and an all-state selection as a senior. His playing resume also includes a stint with the Chatham A's of the Cape Cod Baseball League.

Beausoleil graduated from NC Wesleyan with a degree in political science and justice studies and has completed his courses for his Master's degree in political science from the University of Connecticut.

Meet The Coach
Shawn Gilblair

Shawn Gilblair will enter his third season as head coach of the Mitchell College baseball program in the 2025–26 academic year after guiding the Mariners to continued success in his first two seasons at the helm.

During his second season leading the program in 2025, Gilblair guided Mitchell to a 25–18 overall record and a berth in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship Series. Under his leadership, seven players earned All-Conference recognition while two garnered All-Region honors.

In his first season as head coach, Gilblair led the Mariners to an overall record of 34–13, matching the single-season wins record during the Division III era of the program. Mitchell posted a 14–2 mark in conference play, and Gilblair was named GNAC Coach of the Year after the Mariners defeated Johnson & Wales in a best-of-three championship series to claim the conference title. Mitchell advanced to the final day of the NCAA Tournament Regional Round before falling to nationally ranked Salisbury.

Under Gilblair’s guidance in 2024, eight players earned All-Conference recognition, including freshman Michael Ficocelli, who was named GNAC Rookie of the Year. Additionally, two players earned All-Region honors from D3baseball.com, while three received All-Region recognition from ABCA/Rawlings.

Gilblair made his collegiate head coaching debut with the Mariners after returning to New London in June 2023. He previously served as Mitchell’s pitching coach and recruiting coordinator from 2019–22. Prior to his return, he spent one season at his alma mater, Eastern Connecticut State University, as pitching coach. Gilblair replaced Travis Beausoleil, who compiled a 306–131–2 record over 12 seasons leading the Mariners before accepting the Athletic Director position at UConn Avery Point.

A 2011 graduate of Eastern Connecticut State University, Gilblair enjoyed tremendous success as a student-athlete. He was a three-time First Team All-America selection, a two-time New England Player of the Year, a two-time Co-National Player of the Year, a three-time New England Collegiate Baseball League Top Pitcher of the Year, and was named to the D3baseball.com All-Decade Team.

Before arriving at Mitchell in July 2019, Gilblair served as pitching coach at Eastern Connecticut State University, Montclair State University, and with the New Britain Bees. During his first stint with the Mariners, he helped develop a pitching staff that entered NCAA regional play ranked among the top 10 nationally in major statistical categories, including ERA, strikeout-to-walk ratio, and strikeouts per nine innings. He also recruited 19 players to the program who went on to earn All-Conference and All-Region recognition.

In addition, Gilblair has organized showcase camps and clinics while playing an active role in the team’s strength and conditioning efforts, particularly in the physical development of pitchers, many of whom saw significant increases in velocity.

“I’ve been so fortunate to have great mentors and coaches in my life,” said Gilblair. “Many times, learning about the game of baseball came secondary to preparing for life and growing into young professionals in the real world. Because of this, I take great pride in developing players into respected, reliable, and disciplined competitors beyond the game of baseball.”

During the 2022–23 season at Eastern Connecticut State, Gilblair recruited 80 percent of the incoming 2023 class and guided a pitching staff that ranked 13th nationally in ERA entering NCAA regional play. Three pitchers earned All-Conference recognition, the staff received D3baseball.com Team of the Week honors, and Eastern players were named Little East Conference Pitcher of the Week and Rookie of the Week. Additionally, one pitcher earned D3baseball.com All-America Fourth Team honors.

A native of Windham, Connecticut, Gilblair holds a bachelor’s degree in Sport and Leisure Management from Eastern Connecticut State University.
