Men's Tennis Sweeps NECC Weekly Honors
ATTLEBORO, Mass. – For the fourth time this season and the
second straight week, two members of the Mitchell College
men’s tennis team swept weekly conference honors, as
announced by the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) on
Monday.
Sophomore Kyle Carmona was named NECC Player of the Week while
freshman Rocco Devona was tabbed NECC Rookie of the Week. Both
earn the honors for the fourth time this season, as the duo led
Mitchell to a 3-0 record last week with wins against Becker College
(8-1), Newbury College (9-0) and Wheelock College (9-0). The
Mariners finished the season undefeated and won their second
straight NECC title.
Carmona went 3-0 at No. 1 singles, defeating Becker’s Charles
Heard (6-2, 6-1), Newbury’s Nicholas Sehovich (6-0, 6-1) and
Wheelock’s Wilson Chang (6-0, 6-0). He improved to 9-0
overall in singles action, with every match coming at the top
spot.
Devona took home conference honors for the fifth straight week. He
went 3-0 at the No. 2 singles spot, taking down Becker’s
Chris Parker (6-4, 6-2), Newbury’s Ryan Sevieri (6-0, 6-0)
and Wheelock’s Robert Venning (6-1, 6-2). Devona finished the
regular season with a 10-0 mark in singles play.
Carmona and Devona also teamed up to go 3-0 at No. 1 doubles for
the week. The tandem grabbed wins by finals of 8-3, 8-1 and 8-1
respectively and improved to 9-0 overall in doubles action.
Mitchell will next compete at the 2010 NECC Championship on May 1-2
at Connecticut College. The flighted tournament will begin at 10
a.m. on each day.
