Mitchell Repeats as 2010 NECC Men's Tennis Champion
ATTLEBORO, Mass.—Once again, the Mariners of Mitchell College
grabbed The 2010 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC)
men’s tennis championship title. The Mariners (10-0 overall)
claimed the top spot after posting a perfect 8-0 NECC record in
conference play.
The Mariners are led by Head Coach Rick Carmona, the 2009 NECC
Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year and the 2008 NECC
Women’s Head Tennis Coach of the Year. Sophomore Kyle
Carmona, the 2009 Player of the Year, and freshman Rocco
Devona have led the way all season for the
Mariners. Devona has produced a perfect record at 10-0 at the
#2/#3 spot while Carmona has also remained undefeated at 9-0 at #1
singles. Carmona and Devona have paired for a 9-0 record in the #1
doubles action. Devona paired with sophomore Tyler
Engleberg for a 1-0 record at the #1 spot. Engleberg, the
2009 Rookie of the Year, finished regular season with a 6-0 overall
singles record and 5-1 in doubles.
The Lynx of Lesley University (7-2, 6-2) earned the 2010 NECC
men’s tennis runners-up plaque. The Hawks of Becker College
(4-9, 4-4) finished in third place in the NECC.
The Wildcats of Wheelock (1-9, 2-6) and the Nighthawks of Newbury
(0-12, 0-8) finished fourth and fifth in the conference play.
The 2010 NECC Men’s Tennis Championship is determined solely
on regular season conference matches.
The 2010 New England Collegiate Conference Men’s Tennis
Championship Tournament will be an individual flighted tournament
that is based upon student-athletes’ singles and doubles
conference records. Players are seeded as individual players and
seeds are not based on a team’s finish.
Championship play will begin this weekend on Saturday, May
1 at Stonington High School in Pawcatuck, Conn. hosted by
Mitchell College. Semifinals doubles action will begin at 1
p.m. on Saturday and will be followed by singles play. The
championships will conclude on Sunday, May 2 (10 a.m.) when the
final winners will be awarded for all six singles flights and all
three doubles flights.
