Men's Tennis Sweeps NECC Weekly Honors
ATTLEBORO, Mass. – For the third time this season, two
members of the Mitchell College men’s tennis team swept
weekly conference honors, as announced by the New England
Collegiate Conference (NECC) on Monday.
Sophomore Kyle Carmona was named NECC Player of the Week while
freshman Rocco Devona was tabbed NECC Rookie of the Week. Both
earn the honors for the third time this season, as the duo led
Mitchell to a 2-0 record last week with wins against Wheelock
College (9-0) and Lesley University (8-1).
Carmona went 2-0 at No. 1 singles, defeating Wheelock’s
Wilson Chang (6-2, 6-0) and Lesley’s David Newton (6-1, 7-5)
in straight sets. He is 6-0 overall this season in singles
action.
Devona played at No. 3 singles against Wheelock and didn’t
drop a game in a win over Katherine Needham (6-0, 6-0). He then
rallied to beat Lesley’s Nick Mattox (6-1, 6-1) while playing
at the No. 2 spot. Devona is also undefeated in singles play with a
record of 7-0.
Carmona and Devona also paired up to go 2-0 at No. 1 doubles last
week. The tandem picked up wins over Wheelock’s Chang and
Robert Venning (8-2) and the Lesley pair of Newton and Alex Zhitnik
(8-0). Carmona and Devona improved to 6-0 in doubles action.
Mitchell will next play at Becker College on Tuesday, April 20 at 3
p.m. A victory would clinch at least a share of the NECC
Championship, which would be the second straight for the Mariners.
