Men's Golf Finishes Ninth at Blazers Invitational
GRANBY, Mass. - The Mitchell College men's golf team tied for ninth
place at the Blazers Invitational on Wednesday afternoon at
Westover Golf Course.
Elms College's Phil Rurak shot an even-par 72 to earn individual
medalist honors and help pace the Blazers' white squad to a
first place score of 305. The Blazers finished 12 strokes
ahead of their nearest competitor Nichols College (317). Rhode
Island College and Westfield State University finished in a tie for
third (320), Worcester State University finished fifth (324), and
Anna Maria College (325), Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts
(327), Franklin Pierce University (343), Mitchell (353) and
Daniel Webster College (353) rounded out the top 10.
Rurak carded a one-over-par 37 on the front nine before rallying
for a one-under-par 35 on the back nine to register the day's
low round. Worcester State's Bob Bruso and Nichols'
Brian Sears each carded rounds of 73 to finish in a tie for
second. MCLA's Shane Ortega earned fourth place honors (74)
while Elms' Henry Fall and Franklin Pierce's BJ Powers
registered rounds of 75 to tie for fifth.
Leading the way for the Mariners was sophomore Justin Szela, who
fired a round of 86 that tied his low round of the season. Senior
Dan Varga recorded a career-best round of 87 while freshman Matthew Markavage shot 89 in his collegiate debut to give the Mariners
three scores in the 80s. Rounding out the scoring were senior John Pescheta (91) and junior Richard Palaia (97).
Mitchell will next host a quad match at Shennecossett Golf Course
on Wednesday, October 6 beginning at 11 a.m.
