Mitchell Golf Duo to Compete in 89th Connecticut Open
BERLIN, Conn. – When the 89th Connecticut Open Championship gets underway on Monday July 24th, the Mitchell College golf team will be well represented at Shuttle Meadow Country Club, as one current member of the program and one former member will be among the 150 golfers in the tournament.
Mike McCarthy, a member of the Class of 2022, along with incoming senior Shamus McLean find themselves among the competing golfers, with McCarthy having teed off at 7:40 am Monday morning and McLean, an amateur, set to get underway later in the day at 1:10 pm. The format of the event is 18-holes of stroke play on both Monday, July 24th and Tuesday, July 25th. The forty players with the lowest 36-hole total will advance to the final round on Wednesday, July 26th, and the player with the low 54-hole total will be declared champion. All professionals that advance to the final round will receive a portion of the $65,000 guaranteed prize pool with the low professional receiving $14,000. Amateurs making the cut will earn merchandise credit redeemable at the Shuttle Meadow Country Club.
McCarthy and McLean are two of the most accomplished golfers in Mitchell program history, owning the top two spots for best scoring average (minimum 15 rounds). During his senior season, McCarthy earned MASCAC All-Conference First Team honors for the second time in his career and sported the lowest stroke average on the team at 78.5. He also placed third in the field of 38 at the MASCAC Championship, helping the Mariners to a third-place team finish, their best ever at the event.
Meanwhile, McLean enjoyed a breakout season in the fall of 2022, posting the lowest stroke average during a single season in program history at 75.3. He opened the season by earning medalist honors the Mitchell Invite, topping the field of 20 golfers with a one-under-par round of 70, which was the second-lowest round in school history, and only the second time a Mitchell golfer has finished under par. McLean earned MASCAC All-Conference First Team honors for the first time in his career, delivering a standout round on the second day of the conference championship by finishing with an even-par score of 71, good for the top individual round score over the two day tournament.
Shuttle Meadow Country Club will play as a par 71 at approximately 6,500 yards with a time par of 4 hours and 28 minutes.
