Baseball Splits Doubleheader With City College of New York
NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College baseball team had no problem scoring runs in the first game of a doubleheader with City College of New York and won 10-4, but struggled to score runs in the second game and fell 3-1. Andrew Langlais (Ledyard, Conn.) had a strong performance on the mound in game one, as he went the distance and gave up six hits and only one earned run.
Mitchell jumped ahead 4-0 in the first inning on a solo home run by Jeff Perillo (Newington, Conn.) and a two-RBI double by Matt Radke (Terryville, Conn.). CCNY would only score four runs in the game and they all came in the fourth inning on four CCNY singles, a passed ball, and an error.
The Mariners would go on to score two more runs in each of the second, third, and fourth innings to earn a 10-4 victory. Perillo finished the game going 2-for-4 with a run, a homer, a double and two RBI, and first baseman Jared Bishop (Moodus, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Alexander Dadras (Corona, N.Y.) took the loss for the Beavers, as he yielded 11 hits and seven earned runs in four innings of work.
Game two was much more of a pitchers' duel between Paul Martinez (New London, Conn.) for the Mariners and Kemil Nunez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) for CCNY. Nunez held Mitchell scoreless for six complete innings, and only gave up five hits, one run, and two walks in seven innings on the mound. Martinez was also very effective as he went the distance and gave up only three hits, three runs, no earned runs in seven innings.
Mitchell scored their only run of the day in the bottom of the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by Matt Hagen (Boulder, Colo.) which scored Langlais who had singled to lead off the inning. The Beavers scored their only runs in the top of the first inning, and they were able to produce three runs on only one hit. Colin Desmarais (Mystic, Conn.) hit an RBI single in the inning, and the other runs scored on an infield error and a passed ball.
Mitchell is now 6-16 overall and 4-6 in CUNY conference play, and they travel to Becker College on Saturday, April 18th for a NECC match-up.
