Baseball Romps Bridgewater With 21 Hit Day

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team pounded out a season-high 21 hits on Tuesday afternoon, routing Bridgewater State University by a 17-1 final in non-conference action. The Mariners, who were playing in their first game since a nine game tilt in Florida, have now outscored their opponents 44-3 over three home games thus far this spring.
The Mariners rode the arm of sophomore righty Chris Gibbs (New Britain, Conn.), who limited the Bears to just one run and six hits across seven innings, good for his second victory of the season. Every batter in the Mitchell starting lineup recorded at least one base hit, with Lelo Martinez (New London, Conn.) and Owen Robbins (East Lyme, Conn.) leading the charge by notching four hits apiece. Matt Falk (Enfield, Conn.) and Bo Yaworski (Brooklyn, Conn.) each belted a home run for the Mariners, Falk with his team-best fourth of the season during the sixth inning, and Yaworski with his third in the last five games during a 10 run seventh.
Angel Galindez (Carolina, PR), Yaworski, Falk, Nicholas Bracale (East Haven, Conn.), Justin Adorno (New Britain, Conn.), and Thai-ler Sestokas (Danbury, Conn.) all had multi–hit games for the Mariners, who scored early and often.
Mitchell jumped on the board first in the bottom of the second with Adorno and Sestokas came through with back to back RBI singles off Bridgewater starting pitcher Matthew Seavey. The Mariners pushed their third run across the next inning when Owen Robbins singled to left field, scoring Dougie DelaCruz (Uncasville, Conn.). After going quietly in the bottom of the fourth, the home squad plated two more runs in the fifth and sixth innings, before breaking the game wide open with 10 runs in the seventh.
The Bears scored their lone run of the game in the top of the third when DJ Prampin led off the inning with a double to centerfield and came home to score two batters later when Scott Emerson knocked him home with an infield single. Prampin was the only player on the visiting ball club to collect more than one hit, finishing 2-3 with a run scored. Seavey earned the loss for Bridgewater, surrendering seven hits and a pair of earned runs over four innings of work.
Eddie Kaftan (Old Lyme, Conn.) and Jacob Quiles (Wallkill, N.Y.) each tossed a scoreless inning out of the bullpen for Mitchell.
The Mariners (9-3 overall) will return to the diamond when they host conference rival New England College for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 25, with the first game scheduled to begin at 12:00 pm. The Bears (7-3 overall) are back in action on Thursday, March 23, facing Rhode Island College on the road.
