Mitchell Baseball Wins in Extra Innings and Advances in CUNY Championship
Brooklyn, N.Y. - Mitchell College starting pitcher Adam Deltgen
received a no decision for his 11+ innings of work, but scored the
winning run in the top of the 13th inning as the Mariners
eliminated John Jay College 8-4 at the 2009 CUNY Athletic
Conference Baseball Championship Friday afternoon at Keyspan
Park.
Deltgen, in his first at-bat of the game, earned a one-out walk in
the top of the decisive inning. He would score the
game-winning run when the next batter, the Con Edison Player of the
Game Matthew Hagen tripled to left centerfield.
"I had been struggling all day," said Hagen, who was 0-for-5 before
his game-winning hit. "I had not been able to catch up to his
fastball all afternoon and I knew he would come with it again."
The Mariners would add three more runs in the inning, with a
two-RBI single off the bat of Jeffrey Perillo to make the score
8-4. John Jay, the second-seed of the tournament, had a
runner reach on an error in the bottom half of the inning, but
could do no more.
We have struggled all season to put hitting and pitching together
in the same game," Mariner head coach Len Farquhar said, "and today
we finally did it. Adam [Deltgen] is a four-year starter and
we checked him after every inning."
The starting pitchers, Deltgen for Mitchell, and Bloodhounds
starter Michael Colletta (5-8) both pitched into the
12th inning. Colletta was charged with the loss,
allowing eight run in 12.2 innings of work, fanning 13 batters, to
give him 102 for the season. Deltgen earned a no decision,
pitching 11+ innings, fanning five and allowing four runs, three of
them earned. Paul Martinez (2-4) earned the win as he
provided two hitless innings of relief, after playing the first 11
innings in left field.
Perillo finished the day 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored
to pace the Mariners offensive effort. Andrew Langlais was
3-for-6 with an RBI, while Clayton Boegler went 2-for-7 with two
runs scored.
Neither team was able to score in their first three at-bats, but
each plated three runs during the fourth and fifth innings.
The Mariners got their first run without a hit in the fourth inning
as Perillo earned a lead-off walk and advanced to third on
consecutive passed balls. A sacrifice fly by Matthew Radke
gave Mitchell a 1-0 lead. Ethan Graynor followed with a
triple to right center in the next at bat and would score as Jared
Bishop singled on the first pitch of his at-bat.
John Jay got one of the runs back in the bottom half of the inning
as Jason Witten reached base on an error and advanced to second
when a pick-off attempt went into the stands. He advanced to
third on a ground out and scored on a single by Steven
Kendrick.
An RBI double to right center by Perillo with two out in the top of
the fifth scored Boegler to give Mitchell a short-lived 3-1
lead. The Bloodhounds tied the score in the bottom of the
inning, putting runners on second and third with no out.
Massoni's ground out to first scored James Podlucky. Xavier
Perez drove in the game-tying run with a line drive to left field
that Paul Martinez left his feet for but could not snag
The first three extra frames saw plenty of scoring chances for both
sides, but neither could get the go ahead run across the plate.
Mitchell put its first two runners on base in each the
10th and 11th inning, but stranded five
runners in those two innings. John Jay got a runner to second in
the 11th inning, but a fly out ended the threat.
The Bloodhounds threatened again in the bottom of the
12th inning as Benjamin Beiro earned a lead-off
walk. Facing his first batter, Martinez fielded a bunt by
Jason Witten and forced Beiro at second base for the first
out. He then fanned Luis Guzman and induced a ground ball to
second to preserve the tie.
Ethan Graynor appeared to give Mitchell the alleged go ahead run in
the eighth, scoring Perillo with a sacrifice fly. John Jay
tied the game in the ninth inning as Massoni doubled to left with
one out, scoring Xavier Perez, and sending the game to extra
frames.
Mitchell advances to face the loser of Friday afternoon's winner's
bracket game between top-seeded Baruch College and the number
three-seed, College of Staten Island, in an elimination game set
for 10 a.m. Saturday.
