HAMDEN, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team shook off a 10-day layoff to win both ends of a non-conference doubleheader at Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday afternoon at Rochford Field.
In cold and windy conditions, the Mariners needed extra innings to post a 4-1 victory in game one before blanking the Falcons 5-0 in the finale. Mitchell won its fourth game in a row to improve to 15-3 on the spring.
In the opener, Mitchell took advantage of a pair of Falcon miscues to score three runs in the top of the 10th en route to the extra-inning victory. In the frame, Kyle Hartenstein lined a single to left field off Falcon reliever Tom Moore to break a 1-1 tie. Later in the stanza, the guests added a pair of insurance runs on a wild pitch and an Albertus throwing error.
Moore was saddled with the loss after working 2.0 innings of relief. On the opposite side, Domenick Giaramida picked up his second win of the year thanks to tossing 2.0 scoreless innings of relief. AMC freshman hurler Malachi Emond got the start and threw 4.0 scoreless innings of one-hit ball. Emond fanned five and surrendered just one walk.
Albertus Magnus pushed across the first run of the game in the bottom of the second courtesy of an RBI double to deep left field by Mike Saia. Three innings later, the Mariners knotted the score at 1-1 with a sac fly to left field that brought Chandler Whitney racing home to score an unearned run.
In the second game, a trio of Mitchell pitchers held the hosts scoreless and scattered five hits on the way to the sweep. Offensively, timely hitting helped the Mariners as the guests took advantage of three AMC errors.
Mitchell jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning thanks to an error, passed ball and RBI single by Garet Griffin. The Mariners later tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh as Tristan Hurley and Francis Prettitore each tripled in the frame and Tyler Pina added a sacrifice fly.
Albertus Magnus reliever Jon Criscio was the tough-luck loser, working 2.0 innings and surrendering three unearned runs. Michael Terzi got the start for the Falcons and tossed 4.0 shutout innings of one-hit ball.
For the Mariners, Tyler Shamas pitched 2.0 innings of scoreless relief to earn his first victory of the spring. Clayton Shaw got the start and pitched 3.0 innings while Axel De Jesus wrapped up the final 2.0 innings.
Mitchell will next host Daniel Webster College on Saturday, April 9 at noon.
