Bedard Selected for Dean Roberts Award
NEW LONDON, Conn. - Mitchell College senior Bryce Bedard was selected as the recipient of the 2020 Dean Roberts Distinguished Service Award, as announced by the Department of Athletics on Monday morning during its virtual awards ceremony.
The Dean Roberts Distinguished Service Award is designed to embody the concepts of leadership, selflessness, and overall commitment to team and sport. It was created to honor legendary soccer coach Dean Roberts, who retired from coaching in 2014 after 29 years.
Bedard, a four-year letter winner on the baseball team, has been the epitome of a leader and good teammate. His selflessness and team-first mentality has inspired those around him, evidenced by the fact that he's been selected as a team captain for the past three seasons.
On the field he's proven to be one of the top relief pitchers in New England, earning all-region and all-conference honors in 2019 while leading the Mariners in appearances and saves. Over his career he has made 40 appearances on the hill and sports an 11-3 record with three saves and a 3.05 ERA. He has also recorded 78 strikeouts in 85.2 innings.
With last season cut short due to COVID-19, Bedard will return for his final campaign with the Mariners in spring 2021. He will lead the charge to bring another NECC title to the program, which he did in 2018 as the winning pitcher against Lesely University in the championship game.
The 2020 Mitchell Athletics Banquet was canceled in May due to COVID-19. While the original goal was to reschedule the event before the end of the year, the decision was made to shift the award ceremony to a virtual setting for the safety of all involved. All award recipients were determined by a vote of the coaches and staff in the department.
