NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader against Fisher College on Sunday afternoon, winning the first game 10-3 before dropping the second 6-5.
Dougie DelaCruz had a big day at the plate for Mitchell, going 4-for-8 with three doubles, a homer and five RBI in the twin bill. Lelo Martinez and Jeremy Santos also went deep for the Mariners, who have taken three of five meetings against Fisher this season.
Mitchell (6-3 overall) will next host Albertus Magnus College for a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 24 at 2 p.m. Fisher (15-3 overall) returns to action at home against Northern Vermont-Lyndon on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
Game 1 – Mitchell 10, Fisher 3
The Mariners put up crooked numbers in every inning but the sixth and reached double digits for the fourth time this season.
An RBI double by John-John Jose snapped a 1-1 tie in the second inning and put Mitchell in front for good. Michael Santiago followed with an RBI single in the frame to extend the margin to 3-1.
Dougie DelaCruz sparked a four-run third inning with an RBI double to left field that scored Robbie DelaCruz all the way from first base. Anthony Diaz then plated a run with a ground out before Martinez cracked a two-run homer over the left-center fence, the first of his Mitchell career.
The Mariners added two more in the fourth when Dougie DelaCruz swatted a big two-run homer to left-center, his team-leading second of the year. He finished the game with four RBI.
Mitchell starter Roland Thivierge improved to 2-0 on the year. He struck out a season-high eight batters over 6.0 innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits.
Nicholas Luchesse paced the Fisher offense, going 2-for-4 with a double, triple and one RBI. Starter William Carpenter took the loss, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on eight hits over 3.2 innings.
Game 2 – Fisher 6, Mitchell 5
The Falcons bounced back with nine hits in the nightcap and held off a late rally by the Mariners. Mitchell trailed 6-2 heading into the final frame, but a three-run homer by Santos tightened things up quickly. Fisher reliever Angel Alicea entered the game with the tying run on base and secured the final two outs to nail down the save.
Earlier in the game with the score tied at 2-2, John Batista crushed a three-run homer to left to give the Falcons the lead in the fifth inning. The margin stayed the same until the seventh as reliever Jose Galan stranded a pair of Mitchell runners in both the fifth and sixth.
In the top of the seventh, Jonathan Rosado beat out a double play to plate an insurance run, which ultimately proved to be the winning run.
Galan picked up the win and improved to 3-0 on the season. He struck out seven and walked five over 3.1 innings of work.
Mitchell starter Jakari Pellegrini suffered the loss, allowing three runs on five hits over 4.2 innings.
