DURHAM, N.C. -- The Mitchell College baseball team dropped the final game of its weekend series against William Peace University, 8-6, on Sunday afternoon at Durham Athletic Park.
The Mariners tied the game at 6-6 on an RBI single by John-John Jose in the sixth inning, but gave back two runs in the home half. Mitchell went down in order in both the seventh and eighth before getting a man on in the ninth, bringing the tying run to the plate with only one out. However, reliever Hunter Ward retired the next two batters to secure the win for the Pacers (2-3 overall).
Jose and Hunter Yaworski each finished with two hits to lead the Mariners, who finished with just six singles in the nine-inning affair. The William Peace pitching staff combined for 11 strikeouts but also issued nine walks.
Mitchell starter Eddie Kaftan went 2.0 innings and allowed three runs on three hits. Relievers Kevin Vining and Derek Dascoulias worked the middle innings while Sam Majewski closed out the final 3.0 frames.
