Falk, Gibbs Claim NECC Weekly Baseball Honors
MANSFIELD, Mass. – Two members of the Mitchell College baseball team were honored by the New England Collegiate Conference on Monday.
Junior catcher Matt Falk was named NECC Player of the Week while freshman pitcher Chris Gibbs was tabbed NECC Pitcher of the Week. The duo helped the Mariners to a 5-0 week that extended the team's winning streak to seven games.
Falk hit .400 with a pair of homers and a team-high nine RBI last week. He homered in both games of a doubleheader against Rutgers-Camden and finished with a combined six RBI on the day. He also knocked in three runs against SUNY-Poly, and he finished with three hits and scored two runs in a doubleheader sweep of Husson. Falk hit safely in all five games and owned a .800 slugging percentage for the week.
Gibbs went 2-0 with 16 strikeouts and a 2.38 ERA last week. He threw 5.1 innings and fanned three in a 5-4 win over Rutgers-Camden at the RussMatt Invitational. The rookie right-hander then turned in a dominant performance at home against Husson, striking out a season-high 13 batters over 6.0 scoreless innings. The 13 punch outs were the most by a Mitchell pitcher since 2015.
Falk is batting .367 with 16 RBI and 15 runs scored through 13 games this season. His four home runs lead the team and are tied for the most in the NECC. Gibbs has made four starts and sports a 3-0 record with a 2.66 ERA and 22 strikeouts.
