Baseball Sweeps Lesley on Senior Day
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team picked up a pair of wins over Lesley University on Saturday afternoon, winning by final scores of 11-1 and 9-0 in New England Collegiate Conference action.
Mitchell scored the first 11 runs of the opener and coasted to the finish. Justin Adorno went 3-for-3 with four RBI to lead the offense, one of five Mariners with multiple hits in the contest. Starting pitcher Chris Gibbs tossed 5.0 scoreless innings and improved to 5-0 on the year.
Eddie Kaftan tossed a gem in the nightcap, recording his first career shutout by limiting the Lynx to only three hits. The Mariners broke the game open with six runs in the fourth inning en route to their fourth-straight victory.
Mitchell (22-7 overall, 5-2 NECC) will next host Lesley for the final game of the regular season series on Sunday, April 24 at noon, a make-up game from the postponement on April 9.
Game 1 – Mitchell 11, Lesley 1
Mitchell put up five runs in the second inning and never looked back. The Mariners sent 10 batters to the plate in the frame, with Adorno kicking things off with a two-run single to left. After John-John Jose scored on an error, Bo Yaworski and Hunter Yaworski each supplied RBI singles to cap the rally.
Angel Galindez made it 6-0 in the third with an infield single, and Mitchell added four more runs in the fourth to go up by double digits. Jose knocked in a run with a single to center, and Adorno plated another pair with a base hit down the left-field line. In the fifth, Dougie DelaCruz crushed a leadoff homer to left to make it an 11-run advantage for the hosts, his second long ball of the season.
Justin Dennett led off the Lesley sixth with a double down the right-field line. He later scored the Lynx's only run thanks to a single through the right side of the infield by Ronnie James.
Gibbs pitched around three errors—including two in the third inning—and allowed only two hits in his outing, striking out six without issuing a walk. Robbie Roles closed out the game and looked sharp in his first appearance of the season, surrendering one run on two hits while fanning four.

Game 2 – Mitchell 9, Lesley 0
An RBI single by Steve Cochrane put the Mariners on the scoreboard in the second inning. Kaftan protected the one-run lead until the Mitchell offense came to life in the fourth, pounding out six runs on six hits to make it a 7-0 game. After an infield chopper by Galindez plated the first run of the frame, B. Yaworski connected on a three-run double widen the gap. DelaCruz later added an RBI double of his own, and Lelo Martinez capped the rally with an RBI single up the middle.
RBI singles by Martinez and Jose upped the lead to 9-0 in the sixth. Kaftan wouldn't need the extra run support, picking up three quick outs in the seventh to earn his third win in his last four starts.
Kaftan retired eight straight batters to start the game and allowed only one runner to touch second base all day. He improved to 4-2 overall on the year.
Patrick Teasdale took the loss for Lesley, allowing seven runs on eight hits over 4.0 innings. He struck out two batters but issued six walks.
Prior to the game the Mariners honored their six seniors in a special ceremony. The group—which included H. Yaworski, Jose, Sam Majewski, Cochrane, Lucca Ardovini-Brooker and Robby Fusari III—has won 87 games over the course of the last four years.
