Baseball Drops Road Game to Monks
STANDISH, ME – The Mitchell College baseball team traveled north for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game against Saint Joseph's College (ME) on Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Monks, 8-3, at the Larry Mahaney Diamond.
With the loss, the Mariners drop to 11-3 in conference play with two more GNAC games remaining on their schedule.
The Monks jumped out to an 8-0 lead against Mitchell starter Chase Donahue (Shirley, Mass.), but the Mariners responded by plating a pair of runs in the top of the fifth on an RBI double by sophomore Tyler Powell (Middletown, Conn.) and a run-scoring ground out by freshman Ryan Dennis (Enfield, Conn.). Junior Nicholas Bracale (East Haven, Conn.) added his second home run of the season the following inning, but that was all the offense the Mariners could produce against the Monk's pitching staff.
Dylan Brander got the start and picked up his fourth win of the spring for SJC, tossing seven innings of three-run ball, striking out eight. High Barett and William Dionne combined for two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Jared Wilhelm had a big day at the plate, going 3-5 with two doubles and three RBI to lead the Monks' offense.
Donahue was tagged with 11 hits and seven earned runs in four innings of work.
Tyler Powell had a pair of doubles and drove in one run for Mitchell, while Ryan Dennis and Adam Vartanian each added a pair of hits in the loss.
The Mariners (20-15, 11-3 GNAC) are scheduled to return to action on Thursday, April 24, with a non-league game against crosstown rival Coast Guard Academy at 4:00 pm. The Monks (16-16, 6-7 GNAC) jump back into action on Wednesday, April 23, with a home game against Colb
