Baseball Holds Off Ferrum in High-Scoring Battle
FERRUM, Va. – The Mitchell College baseball team held off a late push from Ferrum College to earn a 13–11 victory on Monday afternoon in non-conference action at Panther Field.
Mitchell jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the second inning. An error allowed junior Michael Ficocelli (North Providence, R.I.) to score the game's first run before senior Nicholas Bracale (East Haven, Conn.) followed with an RBI single. Junior Jayden Sgro (Glastonbury, Conn.) then doubled home a run and later scored on a wild pitch to give the Mariners a 4–0 advantage.
Ferrum answered with two runs in the second and surged ahead with a five-run third inning to take a 7–4 lead. Mitchell responded quickly in the fourth, scoring five runs to regain control of the game. Bracale and junior Chas Terni Jr. (Montville, Conn.) helped spark the rally before sophomore Christopher Piscione (Cranston, R.I.) launched a three-run home run to left field, putting the Mariners back in front 9–7.
The Mariners added three more runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run homer from Sgro that extended the lead to 12–7. Ferrum trimmed the deficit to two later in the inning, but Mitchell maintained the advantage and added an insurance run in the eighth.
Sgro paced the Mitchell offense with three hits, including a double and home run, while driving in three runs and scoring twice. Piscione also drove in three runs with his three-run homer, while Bracale and Terni Jr. each recorded two hits. The Mariners drew nine walks and capitalized on four Ferrum errors in the contest.
Junior Andrew Manzo (Naugatuck, Conn.) earned the win in relief, allowing three runs (one earned) over 1.1 innings. Senior Dom Yarson (Ewing, N.J.) provided key middle relief with 3.1 scoreless innings, striking out four, before senior Jacob Quiles (Wallkill, N.Y.) closed out the final 1.1 innings.
Ferrum finished with 15 hits and was led by Jachob Walters, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a home run, while Jayden Singleton added three hits and an RBI.
The Mariners (2-2, 0-0 GNAC) continue their six-game spring break tilt on Tuesday, March 10, with a showdown against Swarthmore College at 12:00 p.m.
