Baseball Holds Off Marietta for Second Straight Win
LEXINGTON, S.C. – The Mitchell College baseball team built an early lead and leaned on dominant relief pitching to defeat Marietta College, 8–6, on Thursday afternoon at Lexington County Stadium in Spartan Southern Classic action.
The Mariners jumped out quickly, scoring four runs in the first inning. Senior Johnny Brucato (Cheshire, Conn.) drove in the opening run with an infield single before fellow senior Dom Yarson (Ewing, N.J.) delivered a two-run single to center field to give Mitchell a 4–0 advantage.
Mitchell added four more runs in the second inning to extend the lead to 8–1. Brucato picked up his second RBI of the game with a single, and junior Chas Terni Jr. (Montville, Conn.) launched a two-run home run to right field to cap the scoring for the Mariners.
Marietta chipped away with five runs over the next two innings, highlighted by a three-run homer from Luke Jarzynka in the second and back-to-back solo home runs in the third, trimming the Mitchell lead to 8–6.
The Mariners' pitching staff shut the door the rest of the way. Senior Jacob Quiles (Wallkill, N.Y.) was outstanding in relief, tossing six scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and striking out 10 to earn the victory.
Mitchell finished with 11 hits in the contest. Brucato led the offense with three hits and two RBI, while Savier Paige (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Terni Jr. each collected two hits. Terni Jr. also drove in two runs with his home run, and Yarson added two RBI.
The Mariners (4-3, 0-0 GNAC) will continue their spring break swing on Friday, March 13, against SUNY Cobleskill at 9:00 a.m.
