Baseball Falls to Spartans to Close Spring Break
LEXINGTON, S.C. – The Mitchell College baseball team wrapped up play at the Spartan Southern Classic with a 5–2 loss to No. 20 Case Western Reserve University on Saturday morning at Lexington County Stadium.
The Spartans struck early, scoring two runs in the opening inning on a two-run single by Collin Pool. Case Western Reserve added another run in the third before pushing the lead to 5–0 with a pair of runs in the fourth inning.
Mitchell broke through in the fifth inning when sophomore Ryan Dennis (Ellington, Conn.) lined an RBI single to center field to score junior Michael Ficocelli (North Providence, R.I.). The Mariners added another run in the ninth as senior Kenneth Miller Jr. (New London, Conn.) delivered an RBI single to right center to plate freshman Angel Rodriguez Cruz (Cidra, D.R.).
The Mariners finished with nine hits in the contest. Junior Chas Terni Jr. (Montville, Conn.) led the offense with two hits, while Ficocelli, Christopher Piscione (Cranston, R.I.), and Nicholas Bracale (East Haven, Conn.) each recorded doubles.
On the mound, junior Patrick Mitchell (Garristown, Ireland) took the loss after allowing five runs over four innings of work. Senior Dom Yarson (Ewing, N.J.) provided strong relief, tossing five scoreless innings while striking out five.
Case Western Reserve was paced by Pool, who drove in three runs, while Eli Westrick added three hits.
The Mariners (5-4, 0-0 GNAC) will return to New London for their home opener against Clark University on Tuesday, March 17, with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
