Baseball Routs MIT in Midweek Showdown
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team exploded for 23 runs on 17 hits to power past MIT, 23–12, in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field.
After falling behind 2–0 in the opening inning, the Mariners wasted no time, answering with three runs in the bottom half before breaking the game open with a seven-run second inning. Mitchell later added five runs in the fourth, four in the fifth, and four more in the seventh to secure the high-scoring victory.
Mitchell's offense was relentless throughout, drawing 14 walks and producing runs in five different innings. Senior Johnny Brucato (Cheshire, Conn.) led the charge with three hits, including a home run, and three RBI. Senior Kenneth Miller Jr. (New London, Conn.) delivered a monster performance, going 4-for-5 with five RBI.
Junior Chas Terni Jr. (Montville, Conn.) added three RBI on two hits, including a double and a triple, while junior Jayden Sgro (Glastonbury, Conn.) contributed two hits, two RBI, and three runs scored.
The Mariners broke the game open in the second inning, sending 12 batters to the plate and plating seven runs to turn a one-run deficit into a commanding lead. They continued to apply pressure with multi-run frames in the fourth and fifth before tacking on four more in the seventh.
On the mound, freshman Jack Bissaillon (Great Barrington, Mass. ) earned the win, allowing three runs (two earned) over 2.0 innings. Mitchell's bullpen combined to limit the damage, with junior Dom Yarson (Ewing, N.J.) tossing 1.2 scoreless innings and sophomore Ethan Nichols (Alderville First Nation, Canada) adding 1.1 shutout frames.
MIT finished with 12 runs on 12 hits, highlighted by four hits and three RBI from Dalton Chi and three RBI from Joey Severson.
The Mariners (10-6 3-1 GNAC) return to GNAC play on Saturday, Matrch 28, with a pair of games against Colby-Sawyer College.
