Baseball Stays Hot, Rolls Over Dean
FRANKLIN, Mass. – The Mitchell College baseball team ran its winning streak to eight games on Sunday afternoon, sweeping Dean College 14–8 and 13–1 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at Longley Field.
The Mariners (14–6, 7–1 GNAC) return to action with a pair of conference games on Friday, April 3, at Albertus Magnus College. First pitch in the opener is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
Game 1 – Mitchell 14, Dean 8
Mitchell struck first in the opening inning when junior Chas Terni Jr. (Montville, Conn.) delivered an RBI single to plate sophomore Ryan Dennis (Ellington, Conn.). After Dean answered with a run of its own, the Mariners regained the lead in the third on a sacrifice fly from junior Michael Ficocelli (North Providence, R.I.) to make it 2–1.
The Mariners broke the game open in the fourth, sending 13 batters to the plate and scoring 10 runs. Freshman Angel Rodriguez Cruz (Carolina, Puerto Rico) and junior Jayden Sgro (Glastonbury, Conn.) each delivered RBI doubles before Terni Jr. launched a three-run home run to give Mitchell a commanding lead.
Junior Christopher Piscione (Cranston, R.I.) and Rodriguez Cruz followed with back-to-back solo home runs to cap the explosive inning and put the Mariners ahead 12–8.
Mitchell added insurance in the fifth on an RBI single by Piscione and tacked on another run in the seventh when senior Adam Vartanian (Cumberland, R.I.) stole home.
The Mariners finished with 15 hits in the contest, with senior Kenneth Miller Jr. (New London, Conn.) leading the way with three hits. Terni Jr. drove in a game-high four runs, while Piscione and Rodriguez Cruz each added two RBI. Dennis scored a team-high three runs.
On the mound, junior Patrick Mitchell (Garristown, Ireland) earned the win, allowing eight runs (six earned) over 3.2 innings. Junior Ethan Chavez (New London, Conn.) and senior Jacob Quiles (Wallkill, N.Y.) combined for 3.1 scoreless innings in relief to secure the victory.
Dean totaled 12 hits in the game, highlighted by a four-RBI performance from Matthew Dutton. Domenic Brazeau took the loss after surrendering 11 earned runs in 3.1 innings of work.
Game 2 – Mitchell 13, Dean 1
Mitchell struck first in the second inning as Angel Rodriguez Cruz lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home a run, and senior Nicholas Bracale (East Haven, Conn.) followed with an RBI groundout to make it 2–0.
After Dean trimmed the deficit to 2–1 in the third, the Mariners broke the game open in the fourth when Jayden Sgro delivered a bases-clearing single to drive in three runs and later scored on a wild pitch as Mitchell pushed the lead to 6–1.
The Mariners continued to add on in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. Terni Jr. doubled home a run in the fifth, while Sgro launched a solo home run in the sixth. Mitchell capitalized on Dean miscues throughout the game, adding multiple unearned runs to extend the advantage.
Senior Johnny Brucato (Cheshire, Conn.) capped the scoring in the seventh with a two-run single to make it 13–1.
Sgro led the offensive effort with two hits, including a home run, and a game-high four RBI. Terni Jr. added two RBI and scored three times, while Bracale and Piscione each drove in two runs.
On the mound, sophomore Braiden Alaimo (Enfield, Conn.) earned the win, allowing one run on two hits over 3.2 innings while striking out two. Chavez was effective in relief, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings and allowing just one hit while striking out three.
Dean was limited to three hits in the contest, with Gavin Goss accounting for the lone RBI.
