Terni Jr. Sets Home Run Record as Baseball Rolls Past Albertus
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior right fielder Chas Terni Jr. (Montville, Conn.) belted the 25th home run of his Mitchell College career on Friday afternoon to move into sole possession of first place in the program's Division III era, as the Mariners swept a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader with Albertus Magnus College at Alumni Field.
The Mariners took the first game, 5–0, behind a complete-game one-hitter from senior right-handed pitcher Thai-ler Sestokas (Danbury, Conn.), before capping the day with an 11–4 win over the Falcons in game two.
Winners of 10 straight games, the Mariners (16–6, 9–1 GNAC) will look to keep it rolling when they host Norwich University for a pair of GNAC games on Saturday, April 4, with first pitch in the opener scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
Game 1 – Mitchell 5, Albertus 0
Mitchell got on the board in the second inning when Terni Jr. launched a solo home run to center field, his sixth of the spring and 25th of his career. The long ball pushed Terni Jr. past Dougie Delacruz '23 and into the top spot for all-time home runs in the program's Division III era.
The Mariners added to their lead in the fifth on an RBI single from junior Michael Ficocelli (North Providence, R.I.), and sophomore Ryan Dennis (Enfield, Conn.) followed with an RBI single in the sixth to make it 3–0.
Mitchell tacked on two more runs in the seventh, as Terni Jr. delivered an RBI double down the left field line and junior Christopher Piscione (Cranston, R.I.) followed with an RBI single to cap the scoring.
Terni Jr. led the offense with two hits, including a home run and a double, and drove in two runs. Piscione added a team-high three hits and an RBI, while Dennis chipped in two hits, an RBI, and a run scored.
On the mound, Sestokas was dominant, tossing a complete-game shutout while allowing just one hit and one walk and striking out four.
Albertus Magnus was limited to a single hit in the contest, coming from Alex Perez. Justin Feinstein took the loss after allowing five runs on 10 hits over 6.2 innings.
Game 2 – Mitchell 11, Albertus 4
After a pair of scoreless frames, Mitchell jumped out to a 4–0 lead in the third inning, highlighted by a bases-clearing triple from Dennis, who drove in three runs. Ficocelli followed with an RBI groundout to cap the inning.
Albertus Magnus answered with four runs in the bottom half of the third to even the score, but the Mariners quickly regained control in the fourth. Sgro delivered an RBI double, Brucato added a sacrifice fly, and Mitchell capitalized on aggressive baserunning to take a 7–4 lead. Ficocelli also added an RBI double in the inning.
The Mariners continued to add insurance runs in the later innings, with RBI contributions from Brucato, sophomore Braiden Alaimo (Enfield, Conn.), and Sgro helping extend the lead to 11–4.
Dennis led the offense with three hits, including a triple, and a game-high three RBI. Ficocelli added two hits and two RBI, while Sgro chipped in two hits, two RBI, and two runs scored. Freshman Angel Rodriguez Cruz (Cidra, P.R.) also recorded two hits and scored twice.
On the mound, senior Dom Yarson (Ewing, N.J.) was outstanding in relief, tossing 6.0 scoreless innings while allowing just four hits to earn the win. Junior Ethan Chavez (New London, Conn.) got the start, allowing four runs over the first three innings.
Albertus Magnus finished with 10 hits in the contest, led by Brayden Hastings, who recorded three hits and an RBI.
