HOLYOKE, Mass. – The Mitchell College baseball team continued its strong start in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Saturday afternoon, sweeping Elms College behind a potent offensive showing and solid pitching performances at Mackenzie Stadium.
Game 1 – Mitchell 13, Elms 5
The Mariners wasted no time jumping on the scoreboard, capitalizing on defensive miscues to plate two runs in the first before breaking the game open with a four-run second and a three-run third to take a commanding 9–1 lead.
Mitchell continued to add on throughout the middle innings, highlighted by an RBI single from senior Nicholas Bracale (East Haven, Conn.) in the fourth and a three-run sixth that extended the advantage to 13–2.
Junior Jayden Sgro (Glastonbury, Conn.) led the offensive effort with two hits and two RBI, while Bracale went a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Ryan Dennis (Ellington, Conn.) added a hit, an RBI, and three stolen bases, and junior Michael Ficocelli (North Providence, R.I.) chipped in a double and an RBI.
On the mound, junior Ethan Chavez (New London, Conn.) earned the win, allowing five runs on nine hits over 7.0 innings while striking out five.
Elms finished with nine hits, with Manny Essley collecting two hits and an RBI, while Brycen Diaz added a pair of doubles and a run batted in.
Game 2 – Mitchell 21, Elms 2
The Mariners racked up 22 hits in the contest, turning a 2–2 tie into a rout with an explosive fifth inning. Mitchell sent 20 batters to the plate in the frame, capitalizing on timely hitting and defensive miscues to seize complete control.
Senior Johnny Brucato (Cheshire, Conn.) led the offensive surge with three hits and a game-high five RBI, while freshman Angel Rodriguez Cruz (Cidra, P.R.) added three hits, including a home run, and four RBI. Junior Chas Terni Jr. (Montville, Conn.) and senior Kenneth Miller Jr. (New London, Conn.) each drove in three runs, and Bracale chipped in three RBI, including a two-run triple.
On the mound, freshman Andrew Manzo (North Haven, Conn.) earned the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits over 6.0 innings while striking out six. Fellow freshman PJ Colla (Brookfield, Conn.) worked a scoreless inning in relief to close out the victory.
