Baseball Celebrates Senior Day with GNAC Sweep of Lasell
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team celebrated Senior Day on Sunday afternoon by improving to 14-2 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play with a sweep of Lasell University at Alumni Field.
After holding off the Lasers, 8–5, in the opener, the Mariners surged past Lasell, 12–2, in the second game to extend their winning streak to four.
The Mariners (21-8, 14-2 GNAC) will pause conference play for a midweek non-conference game at Keene State College on Tuesday, April 14, at 3:00 p.m.
Game 1 – Mitchell 8, Lasell 5 (7 Innings)
After falling behind in the opening inning, the Mariners responded with a run in the third before taking control with a three-run fourth, capitalizing on Lasell miscues to build a 4–1 advantage. Mitchell added key insurance in the sixth, plating four runs highlighted by a two-run home run from junior Chas Terni Jr. (Montville, Conn.) to extend the lead to 8–1.
Lasell mounted a late push in the seventh, scoring four runs, including a three-run homer by Connor Freitas, but Mitchell was able to close out the victory.
The Mariners totaled 13 hits in the contest, with junior Christopher Piscione (Cranston, R.I.) leading the way with a perfect 4-for-4 performance and an RBI. Junior Jayden Sgro (Glastonbury, Conn.) added two hits, three runs scored, and an RBI, while Terni Jr. drove in two runs with his sixth-inning blast. Senior Kenneth Miller Jr. (New London, Conn.) also added an RBI in the win.
On the mound, senior Thai-ler Sestokas (Danbury, Conn.) earned the win, allowing five runs (one earned) on nine hits over 6.2 innings while striking out seven. Senior Jacob Quiles (Wallkill, N.Y.) recorded the final out to secure the victory.
Lasell finished with nine hits, with Freitas leading the way with three hits and four RBI.
Game 2 – Mitchell 12, Lasell 2 (8 Innings)
The Mariners set the tone early, plating one run in the first before erupting for three runs in the second and three more in the third to build a 7–2 advantage. Mitchell added insurance runs throughout the middle innings before putting the game away with a three-run eighth.
Mitchell totaled 16 hits in the contest, led by senior Nicholas Bracale (East Haven, Conn.), who went a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Piscione continued to swing a hot bat, adding three hits and an RBI; across the doubleheader, he finished 7-for-8 with a double, three runs scored, and two RBI.
Junior Michael Ficocelli (North Providence, R.I.) drove in a game-high three runs, senior Adam Vartanian (Cumberland, R.I.) chipped in a pair of RBI, and senior Johnny Brucato (Cheshire, Conn.) added three RBI.
On the mound, senior Dom Yarson (Ewing, N.J.) earned the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits over 7.0 innings while striking out eight. Sophomore Braiden Alaimo (Enfield, Conn.) worked a scoreless inning in relief to close out the victory.
Lasell finished with eight hits in the contest, with Declan Silva driving in both runs for the Lasers.
