Baseball Drops Road Contest at Johnson & Wales
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Mitchell College baseball team fell by a 12-3 final at Johnson & Wales University on Wednesday evening at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.
The Mariners struck first with two runs in the top of the opening inning. Sophomore Ryan Dennis (Enfield, Conn.) came around to score on a sacrifice fly by junior Michael Ficocelli (North Providence, R.I.), and fellow junior Christopher Piscione (Cranston, R.I.) later crossed the plate on a wild pitch to give Mitchell an early 2-0 edge.
Johnson & Wales answered immediately, pulling even in the bottom of the first on a two-run double by Jack Dwyer before taking control with a four-run second inning. The Wildcats took advantage of a pair of Mitchell errors in the frame and never gave the lead back.
Mitchell trimmed the deficit to 6-3 in the fourth when Braiden Alaimo (Enfield, Conn.) scored on an RBI single by Dennis, but Johnson & Wales responded with four more runs in the sixth and added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to pull away.
Dennis led the Mitchell offense by going 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored while also stealing two bases. Ficocelli added a double and an RBI, and Alaimo reached base twice and scored once. Angel Rodriguez Cruz (Cidra, P.R.) and junior Chas Terni Jr. (Montville, Conn.) also recorded hits for the Mariners.
Junior Ethan Chavez (New London, Conn.) took the loss on the mound, allowing six runs, five earned, over 2.0 innings. Freshman Jack Bissaillon (Great Barrington, Mass.) worked 3.1 innings in relief and struck out five, while Ethan Nichols (Ontario, Canada) fanned three over 1.2 innings.
Johnson & Wales finished with 14 hits in the contest, including a 4-for-5 performance from Yedan Diaz and three RBI from Dwyer.
The Mariners (24-10, 16-2 GNAC) will close their season on Saturday, April 25, with a conference doubleheader at Saint Joseph's College (Conn.).
