Softball's Fiederlein, DelConte Notch NECC Honors
ATTLEBORO, Mass. – For the second straight week, a pair of Mitchell College softball players were honored by the New England Collegiate Conference on Monday.
Sophomore Brittany Fiederlein was named NECC Pitcher of the Week while freshman Samantha DelConte was a repeat selection as NECC Rookie of the Week. The duo helped the Mariners to a 5-3 record last week that included conference sweeps of Becker College and Daniel Webster College.
Fiederlein made six starts and one relief appearance last week and went 4-2 with a 1.95 ERA. Three of those wins came in NECC play, including an eight-inning shutout against Becker in which she struck out six. In the doubleheader against the Hawks she allowed only one run (unearned) in 15.0 combined innings. She was also a force at the plate batting .391 with three doubles, a home run, three runs scored and a team-high nine RBI while recording four multi-hit games.
Fiederlein has twice been named Pitcher of the Week this season and, along with a Player of the Week nod on April 13, has been recognized each of the last three weeks. In 23 pitching appearances this season she is 12-7 overall with a 1.92 ERA and four shutouts, and she currently leads the NECC in ERA, wins, strikeouts and innings pitched (131.1).
DelConte, a catcher, batted a team-high .520 and scored eight runs out of the lead-off spot last week. She hit safely in six of the eight games and recorded multiple hits in four contests, including a four-hit game against Fitchburg State University. In the doubleheader against Daniel Webster she went 5-for-7 with two doubles, a triple, a home run, two RBI and four runs scored. She was also flawless behind the plate in 60 total chances and caught three runners stealing.
DelConte has started all 26 games behind the plate this season and is batting .365 with eight RBI and 16 runs scored. In league play she is batting .457 and has hit safely in 12 of 14 NECC contests.
Mitchell (13-13 overall, 12-2 NECC) will next play at Wheelock College on Wednesday, April 22 at 3 p.m.
