DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Mitchell College softball team dropped a doubleheader against UMass Dartmouth on Sunday afternoon by final scores of 3-2 and 4-2 at the UMD Softball Park.
The Corsairs picked up a walk-off win in the opener thanks to an RBI single by Larissa Piessens. In the nightcap, UMass Dartmouth jumped out to a 4-0 lead and held off the Mariners down the stretch.
Brooke Whitmarsh had three hits in the doubleheader—including her third homer of the season—to lead the Mariners at the plate.
Mitchell (10-10 overall) will next host Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday, April 12 at 3:00 p.m.
Game 1 – UMass Dartmouth 3, Mitchell 2
After the Mariners stranded a runner on third base in the first inning, Dyonna Rodas led off the bottom of the frame with a solo homer to stake the Corsairs to an early 1-0 lead. Mitchell pulled in front in the third inning with a pair of runs, as Gemma Landry scored on a throwing error and Whitmarsh followed with an RBI double.
UMass Dartmouth tied the game on a sacrifice fly in the fourth. In the sixth, Mitchell looked primed to regain the lead with runners and second and third with no outs, but UMD starter Jill Richards pitched her way out of trouble and the score remained knotted at 2-2.
Rodas set the table with a one-out single in the seventh. She moved to second on a hit batter and third on a wild pitch, and she scored the winning run on the infield single by Piessens.
Richards allowed only three hits and struck out seven batters to improve it 8-3 on the season. Mitchell starter Katelyn Lipsky allowed 10 hits, struck out four and walked three.
Game 2 – UMass Dartmouth 4, Mitchell 2
UMass Dartmouth put up crooked numbers in each of the first three innings to build a 4-0 advantage. The Mariners got a run back in the fourth on a leadoff homer by Whitmarsh, tying her for the team lead in the category.
In the seventh, Mitchell was down to its final out before starting a rally. Singles by Landry and Hannah Lemke put runners on the corners for Jenna Bennett, who singled back to the pitcher to knock in a run. But with the tying runs on base, the Mariners finally ran out of outs as reliever Ella Beaulieu got a strikeout to end the game.
Mitchell starter Emily Reynolds gave up four runs (three earned) on eight hits and fanned a pair of batters in the loss.
