Softball Splits on First Day of Spring Break
LITTLE RIVER, S.C. – The Mitchell College softball team opened up their season on Sunday by splitting a non-conference doubleheader at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic, beating New Jersey City University, 7-2, before falling to Kenyon College, 8-3.
The Mariners (1-1, 0-0 GNAC) jump right back into action on Monday, March 10, with a doubleheader against FDU-Florham at 9:00 am and Penn State Mont Alto at 1:00 pm.
Game 1 – Mitchell 7, New Jersey City 2
The Mariners opened the scoring in the top of the first, as senior Emma LaBreck (Rollinsford, N.H.) laced an RBI single into right field to score Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.). After the Gothic Knights knotted the score in the bottom of the first, the Mariners erupted for four runs in the second, highlighted by a three-run triple to centerfield off the bat of senior Brooke Whitmarsh (Portsmouth, R.I.). Three scoreless innings followed, before DeCicco made it a 6-1 game with a run scoring single through the right side in the sixth.
The Gothic Knights got one back in the bottom of the sixth, before the Mariners tacked one more on in the seventh on an RBI single to right field by junior Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.).
DiCicco had three of Mitchell's 14 hits, finishing 3-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Senior Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME) went 2-4 with a double and Whitmarsh was had a pair of hits, including her bases clearing triple.
Senior Emily Reynolds (Somers, Conn.) picked up her first win of the season, allowing just two runs (one earned) over seven innings of work, striking out three.
Elyze Lopez took the loss for New Jersey City after surrendering five runs in two innings. Jordan Mendolla and Cheyenn Fulton had two hits apiece in the loss.
Game 2 – Kenyon 2, Mitchell 3
The Owls leapt out to an early lead on RBI singles by Arianna Jalomo and Natalya Delsante, building a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Mitchell then got two runs back in the fourth on a run scoring triple off the bat of Brooke Whitmarsh and an RBI groundout by Emma LaBreck, but they were unable to close the gap, as Kenyon turned a 4-3 lead into an 8-3 advantage with four runs in the top of the seventh.
Olivia DeCicco and Whitmarsh each had two hits for Mitchell, while DiCicco scored two runs. Sophomore Houstyn McConaghy (Lincoln, R.I.) was the losing pitcher after allowing eight runs (four earned) in seven innings.
Arianna Jalomo went 2-3 with three RBI and two runs scored for Kenyon. Izzy Akin improved to 2-1 after throwing seven innings of three-run ball.
