DUDLEY, Mass. – The Mitchell College softball team suffered a non-conference sweep at the hands of Nichols College on Saturday afternoon, dropping the opening game of the day narrowly, 3-0, before falling to the Bison, 14-7, at the Nichols Softball Field.
The Mariners (5-5, 0-0 GNAC) will continue their out of league slate of games on Tuesday, March 25, with a road doubleheader at Salem State University, with game one scheduled to begin at 3:00 pm. Game 1 – Nichols 3, Mitchell 0
The Mariners struggled to gain much offensive traction in the first game of the day facing Nichols starter Chelsea Indyk, and one managed to pick up three hits.
The Bison took an early lead in the bottom of the first when Aca Slavinsky hit a leadoff triple and came around to score on an a Mitchell fielding error. The only other runs of the game came in the bottom of the third on a two run double off the bat of Alyssa Pericello, but that was more than enough for Indyk, who threw a complete game shutout, scattering six hits and striking out 11. Pericello finished 2-3 with a double and two RBI, while Allie Silliman had a pair of doubles for Nichols.
Senior Emily Reynolds was tagged with the loss after surrendering 10 hits and three runs across six innings of work, keeping the Bison scoreless from the third inning on. Senior Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME) and Brooke Whitmarsh (Portsmouth, R.I.), along with sophomore Madison Cole (Westbrook, ME) accounted for the only three Mitchell hits of the game.
Game 2 – Nichols 14, Mitchell 7
The Mariners quickly shook off the offensive woes of the first game to begin game number two, scoring six runs in the top of the first on RBI singles by Whitmarsh and Landry, along with a three-run home run off the bat of senior Christina Housley (Norfolk, VA), the first of her Mitchell career.
Nichols stormed back in the bottom of the first by scoring three runs of their own, then following a pair of scoreless frames, the Bison plated four runs in the fourth to take the lead, highlighted by a pinch-hit RBI double by Hanna Cozza. After Nichols added another run in the fifth to go ahead 8-6, the Mariners made it a one-run game in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Housley. The Bison then erupted for six runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up by seven, and Chelsea Indyk, who came out of the bullpen, held Mitchell scoreless in the seventh to secure the victory.
Katelynn Goodman got the start for Mitchell and allowed three runs in three innings. Junior Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.) shouldered the loss after surrendering four runs out of the bullpen.
