Softball Defeated Twice at USJ
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team suffered a pair of losses to the University of Saint Joseph on Wednesday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) South Division action, dropping the opening game by a final of 14-2 in five innings, before getting shut out 2-0 in the second game the the USJ Softball Complex.
The Mariners (7-11, 2-4 GNAC) return home for a conference doubleheader on Friday, April 4, against Johnson & Wales University, with game one scheduled to begin at 3:00 pm. The Blue Jays (9-10, 2-2 GNAC) host Elms College on Saturday, April 5.
Game 1 – USJ 14, Mitchell 2 (Five Innings)
The Blue Jays erupted for 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning and Mitchell was unable to mount a comeback. USJ starter Paige Fekete kept the Mariners off balance, holding them scoreless until senior Brooke Whitmarsh (Portsmouth, R.I.) drove in two on an RBI single to right field, but by that time, the deficit had grown to 14 runs.
Senior Gemma Landy (Lewiston, ME) and junior Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.) had two hits apiece, accounting for four of Mitchell's six hits in the game. Senior Emily Reynolds took the loss in the circle and dropped to 4-6 on the season, allowing 15 hits and 14 runs (seven earned) across four innings.
Fekete picked up the win for USJ, scattering six hits and a pair of runs in five innings. Lorynes Suriel led the Blue Jays at the plate, finishing 3-4 with a triple, four RBI, and two runs scored. Jennifer Antonowicz also had three hits in four at bats, driving in three and scoring twice in the win.
Game 2 – USJ 2, Mitchell 0
The struggles at the plate continued for the Mariners in the second game, as the two runs the Blue Jays scored in the bottom of the second innings proved all they needed.
Alyssa Roberts was in complete control in the circle, pitching a seven-inning complete game shutout, allowing five hits and two walks, striking out two. Alex Silver went 2-3 with one RBI and one run scored for USJ, while Emma Carpenter also had two hits and drove in a run.
Both runs came on singles in that decisive second inning against Mitchell senior Katelynn Goodman (Virginia Beach, VA). Despite the loss, Goodman turned in a quality start, surrendering just one earned run in five innings. Junior Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.) pitched one shutout inning in relief.
DeCicco added two doubles at the plate for the Mariners, while sophomore Madison Cole (Westbrook, ME) went 2-2 with a double of her own.
Jenna Zup, Alyssa Roberts, Alex Silver, and Emma Carpenter had two hits apiece for USJ in the win.
