NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team was defeated twice by Albertus Magnus College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) South Division action on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field, dropping the opener 7-0, before losing 6-4 in the second game.
The Mariners were held in check by Albertus starter Annabelle Jabs in game one, as she struck out nine in five and two third innings. Senior Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME) collected two hits for the Mariners, while senior Emily Reynolds (Somers, Conn.) shouldered the loss, allowing seven runs in seven innings of work.
In game two, Skylar Arent and Mitchell starter Katelynn Goodman (Virginia Beach, VA) kept the game scoreless through the first four innings. Both teams broke through with three runs apiece in the fifth inning, before Albertus took the lead for good in in the top of the sixth.
Senior Brooke Whitmarsh (Portsmouth, R.I.) and sophomore Madison Cole (Westbrook, ME) each had a double and an RBI for the Mariners, while Goodman tossed four innings of three run ball. Junior Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.) shouldered the loss after surrendering two runs in three innings out of the bullpen.
The Mariners (10-15-1, 5-7 GNAC) return to action on Monday, April 14, with a GNAC doubleheader at Rivier University. The Falcons (18-10, 9-1 GNAC) carry an eight game winning streak into their next game, Sunday, April 13, at home against Saint Joseph's College (ME).
