FRANKLIN, Mass. – The Mitchell College softball team wrapped up their regular season on Sunday afternoon, sweeping Dean College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader at the Longley Athletic Complex.
The Mariners pounded out eight runs in the seventh inning, routing the Bulldogs 12-3 in the opener, before outlasting Dean 5-2 in the second game.
The Mariners conclude their regular season with an overall record of 14-18-1 (9-9 GNAC) and will await their seeding in the upcoming conference tournament. The Bulldogs wrap up their season with a record of 9-21 (2-14 GNAC).
Game 1 – Mitchell 12, Dean 3
The Mariners jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the opening game of the day on an RBI double by senior Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME) in the top of the second inning. Dean countered in the bottom of the third when Natalie Hayes hit a leadoff double, advanced to third on a single by the next batter, and came home to score on a defensive error.
The visitors then broke the game open, plating three runs in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by Landry and a two-run double off the bat of junior Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.).
Senior Emma LaBreck (Rollinsford, N.H.) picked up the 100th hit of her Mitchell career with an RBI single to jumpstart a big eight run seventh inning. Junior Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.), Olivia DeCicco, and senior Brooke Whitmarsh (Portsmouth, R.I.) then added run scoring base hits, before senior Christina Housley (Norfolk, VA) belted a three-run home run to increase Mitchell's lead to 12-1.
Mitchell's offense racked up 16 hits, led by DeCicco (3-for-5, three RBI), Landry (3-for-5, two RBI), and Housley, who had two hits, including a homer, and drove in three. Senior Emily Reynolds (Somers, Conn.) went the distance in the circle, earning the win with a complete-game effort, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits while striking out five.
Dean's Natalie Hayes had a strong game with three hits and two runs scored, while Bryce DeGasparre was charged with the loss after surrendering 10 hits and five runs across four and two third innings of work.
Game 2 – Mitchell 5, Dean 2
Mitchell scored twice in the first inning and never relinquished the lead, completing the sweep to wrap their regular season.
Gemma Landry led the way offensively, going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI, including a clutch two-run double in the sixth inning to give the Mariners breathing room. Brooke Whitmarsh chipped in with two hits and an RBI, while senior Katelynn Goodman (Virginia Beach, VA) delivered a complete-game performance in the circle, scattering 10 hits and allowing just two runs without issuing a walk.
Dean collected 10 hits but left too many runners stranded, scoring only on an RBI groundout by Bryce DeGasparr and a single from Madison Nereu.
