Softball Swept in Season-Opening Spring Break Doubleheader
NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Mitchell College softball team dropped both games of its season-opening doubleheader at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic, falling 6–1 to Lancaster Bible College before losing 5–3 to Penn State Schuylkill.
The Mariners (0–2, 0–0 GNAC) will look to quickly rebound with a pair of games on Monday, March 9, against Penn State Scranton and Penn State Altoona.
Game 1 – Lancaster Bible 6, Mitchell 1
Lancaster Bible struck first in the opening inning when Ava Stern doubled to left center to drive in Kendall Jackman for the game's first run. The Mariners answered in the second inning as freshman Arianna Drouin (Swanzey, N.H.) singled to right center to plate junior Brooke Clancy (East Haven, Conn.) and even the score at 1–1.
The Chargers regained the lead in the bottom of the second with two runs, capitalizing on a Mitchell error to move in front 3–1. Lancaster Bible then broke the game open in the fourth inning when Stern delivered another double to left center, driving in three runs to extend the lead to 6–1.
Mitchell finished the game with two hits, one each from Clancy and Drouin. Drouin drove in the Mariners' lone run and also stole a pair of bases.
Senior Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.) took the loss in the circle, tossing 6.0 innings while allowing six runs (five earned) on 10 hits and striking out two.
Lancaster Bible was led by Stern, who went 3-for-4 with four RBI and two doubles, while Madison Atkins picked up her first win of the season, tossing a complete-game two-hitter while allowing just one run and striking out nine.
Game 2 – Penn State Schuylkill 5, Mitchell 3
Penn State Schuylkill struck first in the opening inning when Mackenzie Carl singled to left center to drive in Jade Weiss for a 1–0 lead.
Mitchell answered in the second as junior Zoe Battersby (West Warwick, R.I.) doubled to left field to score Brooke Clancy and tie the game.
The Mariners took their first lead in the third inning when Battersby drove in another run on a groundout, bringing home senior Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.) to make it 2–1. The Lions responded in the bottom of the inning, however, as Keira Devor singled down the left-field line to plate Aryanna Bodg and even the score at 2–2.
Mitchell moved back in front in the fifth inning when Battersby delivered her second RBI double of the game, scoring Olivia DeCicco to give the Mariners a 3–2 advantage.
Penn State Schuylkill answered in the bottom half of the frame with three runs. Bodg highlighted the rally with a two-run triple down the left-field line before Carl added an RBI single to push the Lions ahead 5–3.
Battersby led the Mariners offensively, finishing 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI. DeCicco also collected two hits and scored a run, while Clancy added a double and crossed the plate once as Mitchell totaled six hits.
Freshman Arianna Drouin (Swanzey, N.H.) took the loss in the circle, allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits over 5.0 innings while striking out three.
Penn State Schuylkill was led by Bodg, who finished with a triple, double, and two RBI, while Carl added two hits and two RBI in the win.
