Softball Splits on Day Three of Spring Break
NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Mitchell College softball team split a pair of non-conference games on Wednesday afternoon at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic, routing New Jersey City University, 12–1, before falling 10–2 to Penn State Harrisburg.
The Mariners (2–5, 0–0 GNAC) will conclude their spring break trip on Thursday, March 12, with games against Penn State Mont Alto (9:00 a.m.) and Penn State Abington (11:00 a.m.).
Game 1 – Mitchell 12, New Jersey City 1
The Mariners wasted little time getting on the board, scoring three runs in the opening inning. Freshman Arianna Drouin (Swanzey, N.H.) came home on a triple to right-center by senior Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.), and junior Brooke Clancy (East Haven, Conn.) followed with an RBI single. Junior Zoe Battersby (West Warwick, R.I.) capped the inning with an RBI double to give Mitchell an early 3–0 lead.
Mitchell extended the advantage in the second inning when Clancy delivered a three-run double to left field, plating DeCicco, Drouin, and freshman Christina Aneiro (North Branford, Conn.) to push the lead to 6–0.
New Jersey City got on the board in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Emma Hanlon, but the Mariners answered with two runs in the fifth. Aneiro highlighted the inning with a two-run triple to right field that scored freshman Emma Boisseau (East Providence, R.I.) and senior Kaylee Drago (Danbury, Conn.), stretching the lead to 8–1.
Mitchell added four more runs in the seventh inning to seal the victory.
The Mariners finished with 15 hits in the contest, as Clancy led the offense with two hits and four RBI. DeCicco went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Aneiro also recorded two hits and two RBI. Boisseau and Battersby each added two hits.
DeCicco earned the win in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing one run on eight hits and striking out three to improve her record to 2–1 on the season.
Game 2 – Penn State Harrisburg 10, Mitchell 2
Penn State Harrisburg built an early lead with three runs in the first inning and added three more in the second to take a 6–0 advantage. The Lions later added three runs in the fourth and one in the sixth to extend their lead.
Mitchell broke through in the third inning when senior Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.) tripled to left-center field to score freshman Izzy Fall (Chester, N.H.) and put the Mariners on the board. The Mariners added another run in the fifth when DeCicco singled up the middle to drive in Roman and cut the deficit to 9–2.
Roman finished with a triple and an RBI to lead the Mitchell offense, while DeCicco also recorded an RBI single.
Drouin took the loss in the circle after allowing nine runs (five earned) over four innings. Aneiro worked the final two innings in relief and allowed one run while striking out three.
Penn State Harrisburg collected 10 hits and was led by Aspen Walker, who finished with two hits and two RBI.
