Softball Closes Play in Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic
NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Mitchell College softball team dropped a pair of games on its final day at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic, falling to Penn State Mont Alto, 5–1, before Penn State Abington edged the Mariners, 10–9, in eight innings at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.
The Mariners (2–6, 0–0 GNAC) will return north and prepare for their home-opening doubleheader against Bay Path University on Wednesday, March 18. First pitch in the opener is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
Game 1 – Penn State Mont Alto 5, Mitchell 1
Penn State Mont Alto broke through in the second inning when Abigail Cunn delivered an RBI single to score Sarah Devilb for the game's first run. The Lions added another run in the fourth on an RBI single by Cammble Ster to extend the lead to 2–0.
Mitchell cut into the deficit in the sixth inning when junior Zoe Battersby (West Warwick, R.I.) led off the frame with a single and later came around to score when junior Haley Westfal (La Habra, Calif.) lined an RBI single to right field, trimming the lead to 2–1.
The Lions responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs to pull away. Hailey Spiel drove in a run with a double before Kira Weikert followed with an RBI single, and another run scored on a wild pitch to push the Lions' advantage to 5–1.
Battersby led the Mariners offensively with two hits, while senior Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.), freshman Arianna Drouin (Swanzey, N.H.), and Westfal each added a hit. Mitchell finished with five hits in the contest.
Senior Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.) took the loss in the circle, allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out three over six innings.
Game 2 – Penn State Abington 10, Mitchell 9 (8 innings)
Penn State Abington jumped out to an early lead with four runs through the first three innings before the Mariners responded with a four-run fourth inning to tie the game. Junior Brooke Clancy (East Haven, Conn.) delivered a two-run double to spark the rally and later came around to score, while Emma Boisseau capped the inning with an RBI triple to even the score at 4–4.
The Lions regained the lead with three runs in the fifth and added another in the seventh to take an 8–4 advantage.
Mitchell mounted another comeback in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four runs to tie the game once again. Olivia DeCicco drove in two runs with a single, and Clancy followed with an RBI single to bring the Mariners all the way back.
Penn State Abington regained the lead in the eighth inning on an RBI double by Candice Peck and later added an insurance run on a Mitchell throwing error to move ahead 10–8.
Mitchell pushed across one more run in the bottom half when freshman Christina Aneiro (North Branford, Conn.) drove in senior Kaylee Drago (Danbury, Conn.) with a groundout, but the Mariners were unable to bring home the tying run.
Clancy led the Mitchell offense with two hits and three RBI, while Boisseau, Haley Westfal, and Battersby each recorded two hits.
Drouin started in the circle for Mitchell, allowing four runs (three earned) over three innings. Aneiro took the loss in relief after tossing five innings and surrendering six runs (four earned).
