Softball Takes One in Home Opener
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team picked up a win in its home-opening doubleheader against Bay Path University on Wednesday afternoon, winning the opener, 10–6, before dropping the second game, 6–2, in a five-inning contest shortened due to darkness.
The Mariners (3–7, 0–0 GNAC) will open Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play with a pair of home games against Norwich University on Saturday, March 21.
Game 1 – Mitchell 10, Bay Path 6
The Mariners got on the board in the second inning when junior Brooke Clancy (East Haven, Conn.) launched a solo home run to left field. Mitchell added another run in the frame on an RBI double by freshman Christina Aneiro (North Branford, Conn.) to take a 2–0 lead.
Mitchell broke the game open in the third, plating four runs to extend the advantage to 6–0. Senior Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.) delivered an RBI single, while the Mariners capitalized on a Bay Path error to bring in two more runs. Senior Kaylee Drago (Danbury, Conn.) added an RBI single in the inning.
The Mariners continued to add on in the fourth, scoring three more runs, highlighted by an RBI double from freshman Camryn Russo (Holbrook, N.Y.), pushing the lead to 9–0.
Bay Path rallied with three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth, but Mitchell answered with a run in the fifth and held on down the stretch to secure the victory.
Mitchell finished with eight hits and drew 10 walks in the contest. Senior Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.) led the offense with two hits and two runs scored, while Clancy added a home run and an RBI. Aneiro and Russo each recorded doubles and drove in runs.
In the circle, DeCicco earned the win, allowing six runs (five earned) on four hits over 6.0 innings while striking out seven.
Game 2 – Bay Path 6, Mitchell 2
The Mariners struck first in the opening inning on a sacrifice fly by Olivia DeCicco and took a 2–1 lead in the third when Drago delivered an RBI double.
Bay Path responded late, scoring one run in the fourth before breaking the game open with a four-run fifth inning to take control.
Mitchell was limited to three hits in the contest, with Drago, Roman, and Emma Boisseau (East Providence, R.I.) each recording one.
Tess Frager (Saco, Maine) took the loss in relief, while Christina Aneiro (North Branford, Conn.) and Arianna Drouin (Swanzey, N.H.) also saw time in the circle.
