Softball Picks Up First Sweep of the Season
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team was in total control on Sunday afternoon, sweeping a non-conference doubleheader against the University of Mount Saint Vincent at Alumni Field, taking the opener, 9–1, before routing the Dolphins, 13–1, in game two.
The Mariners will continue a brief stretch of non-conference action when they host Keene State College on Wednesday, March 25, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
Game 1 – Mitchell 9, UMSV 1
After two scoreless innings, the Mariners broke the game open in the third, plating six runs to take control. Senior Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.) drove in a run with a walk before Mitchell capitalized on a wild pitch to add another. Junior Brooke Clancy (East Haven, Conn.) delivered a two-run double, and sophomore Arianna Drouin (Swanzey, N.H.) added an RBI single as the lead grew to 6–0.
Mount Saint Vincent got on the board in the fourth, but Mitchell answered with three more runs in the bottom half. Clancy struck again with a two-run double, and senior Kaylee Drago (Danbury, Conn.) followed with an RBI single to cap the scoring.
Mitchell finished with eight hits in the contest, with Clancy leading the way with two doubles and four RBI. DeCicco added two hits and an RBI, while Drouin and Drago each drove in a run.
In the circle, DeCicco improved to 4–3 on the season, allowing one run on six hits over 5.0 innings while striking out seven.
Samantha Aviles and Simone Caruso had two hits apiece for the Dolphins.
Game 2 – Mitchell 13, UMSV 1
After falling behind 1–0 in the second inning, the Mariners responded in a big way, scoring five runs in the bottom half of the frame to take control. Junior Madison Cole (Westbrook, Maine) sparked the rally with a two-run double, while junior Zoe Battersby (West Warwick, R.I.) capped the inning with a two-run home run.
Mitchell continued to add on in the third, plating four more runs highlighted by a two-run homer from Drago. Battersby added an RBI single, and DeCicco drew a bases-loaded walk to extend the lead to 9–1.
The Mariners put the game out of reach in the fourth with four additional runs. Cole drove in another run, freshman Emma Boisseau (East Providence, R.I.) added an RBI single, and Battersby and DeCicco each contributed RBI to close out the scoring.
Mitchell finished with 11 hits in the contest, with Battersby leading the way with three hits, including a home run, and four RBI. Cole added a double and three RBI, while Drago chipped in with two hits, including a home run, and two RBI.
In the circle, freshman Christina Aneiro (North Branford, Conn.) earned the win, allowing one run on four hits over 5.0 innings while striking out two.
Gracie Laukkanen took the loss for the Dolphins, surrendering seven runs (four earned) in 2.0 innings of work.
