DeCicco Collects 100th Hit in Split with Owls
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team continued its non-conference slate on Wednesday afternoon, splitting a pair of games against Keene State College. The Mariners took the opener in walk-off fashion before the Owls responded with an 11–8 victory in the second game.
The Mariners (7–9, 1–1 GNAC) will host Dean College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader on Saturday, March 28, with first pitch scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
Game 1 – Mitchell 4, KSC 3
Trailing 3–2 entering the final frame, the Mariners mounted a comeback behind timely hitting. After putting runners on base, senior Kaylee Drago (Danbury, Conn.) delivered the game-winning blow with a two-run single down the left field line, scoring senior Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.) and junior Zoe Battersby (West Warwick, R.I.) to walk it off. Keene State took control in the fifth inning, plating three runs highlighted by a two-run double from Elyse Picard.
Mitchell answered in the bottom half of the inning when DeCicco drove in two runs with a double to cut the deficit to 3–2.
The Mariners finished with nine hits in the contest, with DeCicco leading the way with three hits, including a pair of doubles, and two RBI. Drago added two hits and two RBI, while junior Brooke Clancy (East Haven, Conn.) also recorded a multi-hit performance.
In the circle, freshman Christina Aneiro (North Branford, Conn.) earned the win in relief, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit. DeCicco got the start, allowing three runs on seven hits over 5.0 innings while striking out five.
Anna Gostowski paced the Owls with two hits, while Picard drove in two, and Shay Webb tossed 6.0 innings of two run ball in the circle.
Game 2 – KSC 11, Mithell 8
The Owls jumped out to an early lead, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning, but the Mariners answered right back with four runs in the bottom half. Junior Haley Westfal (La Habra, Calif.) delivered a two-run single, and Mitchell capitalized on a Keene State error to even the score at 4–4.
Keene State regained the lead in the second and broke the game open in the fourth, plating five runs to build a 10–4 advantage.
Mitchell chipped away in the fifth, scoring three runs highlighted by a two-run single from senior DeCicco cut the deficit to 10–7. The Mariners added another run in the sixth on a wild pitch, but could get no closer.
Mitchell finished with nine hits in the contest, with Kaylee Drago leading the way with three hits. DeCicco added two hits and two RBI, while Westfal and junior Emma Boisseau (East Providence, R.I.) each drove in two runs.
In the circle, sophomore Tess Frager (Saco, Maine) took the loss, while junior Arianna Drouin (Swanzey, N.H.) and freshman Christina Aneiro (also saw time in relief)
