Softball Suffers Setback Against Dean
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team was swept at home on Saturday by Dean College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader, dropping the opener 6–3 before falling 9–6 in the second game of the twin bill at Alumni Field.
The Mariners (7–11, 1–3 GNAC) will look to bounce back when they continue conference play on Sunday, March 29, with a pair of games on the road at Elms College. First pitch in the opener is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
Game 1 – Dean 6, Mitchell 3
Dean struck first in the third inning, taking advantage of a pair of Mitchell errors to plate two unearned runs and grab an early lead.
Mitchell got on the board in the fourth when freshman Arianna Drouin (Swanzey, N.H.) lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring junior Zoe Battersby (West Warwick, R.I.) to cut the deficit to 2–1.
The Bulldogs answered with two runs in the fifth, highlighted by RBI doubles from Leah Chamberlain and Nina Ostafin, to extend the lead to 4–1.
The Mariners chipped away in the sixth as Drouin delivered an RBI single up the middle to again score Battersby, making it a 4–2 game.
Dean added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh before Mitchell plated one in the bottom half on an RBI single from senior Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.), but the rally fell short.
Mitchell finished with nine hits in the contest, with freshman Christina Aneiro (North Branford, Conn.) leading the way with three hits, including a double and a triple. Battersby added two doubles and scored twice, while Drouin drove in a team-high two runs.
In the circle, DeCicco took the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits over 6.0 innings. Aneiro worked the final inning in relief.
Dean totaled 11 hits in the game, led by Nina Ostafin, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Game 2 – Dean 9, Mitchell 6
Dean once again jumped out to an early lead, plating two runs in the first inning before erupting for five more in the second to take a 7–1 advantage. The Bulldogs capitalized on a combination of hits and Mitchell miscues, with four of the five runs in the second coming unearned.
Mitchell responded in the bottom half of the inning when Drouin lifted a sacrifice fly to score freshman Emma Boisseau (East Providence, R.I.), trimming the deficit to 7–2.
The Mariners continued to battle in the third, putting together a four-run frame to pull within one. Junior Haley Westfal (La Habra, Calif.) delivered an RBI single, while senior Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.) followed with a two-run double to make it a 7–6 game.
Dean added insurance in the fifth inning on a two-run single by Emily Yazzetti to extend the lead to 9–6, and the Mariners were unable to complete the comeback over the final two innings.
Mitchell finished with 10 hits in the contest, with Roman leading the way with three hits and two RBI. Westfal added two hits and an RBI, while junior Brooke Clancy (East Haven, Conn.) and freshman Madison Cole (Westbrook, Maine) each recorded two hits.
In the circle, Aneiro took the loss, allowing seven runs (two earned) over 1.2 innings. Drouin provided strong relief, tossing 5.1 innings and surrendering two runs (one earned) while striking out three.
The Bulldogs totaled nine hits in the game, led by Ostafin, who went 3-for-4 with four RBI.
