Softball Rebounds with GNAC Sweep of Elms
CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Mitchell softball team jumped back into the win column on Sunday afternoon, picking up a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) South Division sweep of Elms College.
The Mariners took the opener 5-2 over the Blazers, before cruising to a 14-2 win in the second game.
The Mariners (9-11, 3-3 GNAC) play next on Saturday, April 4, at home against GNAC foe Regis College. First pitch in the opener is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
Game 1 – Mitchell 5, Elms 2
Mitchell struck first in the opening inning when freshman Christina Aneiro (North Branford, Conn.) drove in a run with a groundout to score senior Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.). The Mariners added to their lead in the third as senior Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.) brought home Roman with an RBI groundout to make it 2–0.
The offense continued to produce in the middle innings, with junior Haley Westfal (La Habra, Calif.) delivering an RBI single in the fourth to extend the advantage to 3–0. Mitchell then broke the game open in the fifth when DeCicco launched a two-run home run to right center, pushing the lead to 5–0.
Elms responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run single by Jill Dykema, but DeCicco settled in to close out the game and preserve the victory.
Mitchell finished with eight hits in the contest, with Roman leading the way with two hits and two runs scored. DeCicco drove in a game-high three runs, while Aneiro and Westfal each added an RBI.
In the circle, DeCicco went the distance to earn the win, allowing two runs on 11 hits while striking out five.
Elms totaled 11 hits in the game, led by Dykema, who went 4-for-4 with two RBI.
Game 2 – Mitchell 14, Elms 2
Mitchell struck first in the opening inning when Olivia DeCicco delivered an RBI single to score Cassandra Roman. Elms answered with an unearned run in the bottom half, but the Mariners quickly regained control.
Mitchell plated three runs in the second, highlighted by an RBI double from Roman and a two-run double by junior Zoe Battersby (West Warwick, R.I.) to take a 4–1 lead.
After Elms trimmed the deficit to 4–2 in the second, the Mariners continued to add on. Senior Kaylee Drago (Danbury, Conn.) drove in two runs with a single in the fourth, and freshman Emma Boisseau (East Providence, R.I.) followed with an RBI double to extend the advantage to 7–2.
Battersby provided the big swing in the fifth, launching a two-run home run to center field to push the lead to 9–2.
Mitchell broke the game open in the sixth, scoring five times to put the contest out of reach. Battersby led the Mariners with three hits, including a home run, two doubles, and six RBI. Roman added three hits, including two doubles, and scored four runs, while Drago chipped in two RBI.
In the circle, freshman Arianna Drouin (Swanzey, N.H.) earned the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits over 6.0 innings while striking out five.
Elms was limited to four hits in the contest, with Kaelyn Zakaitis and Reece Hebert each recording an RBI.
