NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) South Division doubleheader with Regis College on Saturday at Alumni Field, dropping the opener 4–0 before bouncing back for an 8–0 victory in the second game.
The Mariners (10–12, 4–4 GNAC) will pause conference play for a doubleheader on Monday, April 6, when they host Plymouth State University. First pitch in the opening game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
Game 1 – Regis 4, Mitchell 0
Regis struck first in the opening inning, taking advantage of a Mitchell error to plate an unearned run and grab an early lead. The Pride added to their advantage in the sixth inning, scoring three times on a pair of RBI singles and a groundout to extend the lead to 4–0.
Mitchell was unable to generate offensive momentum against Regis pitcher Kate Julian, who tossed a complete-game shutout while allowing just one hit and striking out five.
The Mariners' lone hit came off the bat of senior Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.), who also took the loss in the circle despite allowing just two earned runs on seven hits over 7.0 innings while striking out three.
Regis finished with seven hits in the contest, with four different players recording an RBI.
Game 2 – Mitchell 8, Regis 0 (5 Innings)
Mitchell broke the game open in the second, plating six runs on four hits and capitalizing on multiple Regis miscues. Senior Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.) highlighted the inning with a two-run triple, while fellow senior Brooke Clancy (East Haven, Conn.) added an RBI triple and senior Kaylee Drago (Danbury, Conn.) chipped in an RBI single as the Mariners built an 8–0 advantage.
That would be more than enough support for sophomore Arianna Drouin (Swanzey, N.H.), who was dominant in the circle. Drouin tossed a complete-game one-hit shutout, striking out one and facing just 15 batters.
Mitchell finished with nine hits in the contest, with Roman leading the way with three hits, including a triple, and two RBI. Clancy added a hit and two RBI, while Drago also drove in a run.
Regis was limited to a single hit in the game, coming from Francesca Licata, as the Mariners controlled the contest from start to finish.
