Softball Gets One Against Panthers
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against Plymouth State University on Monday afternoon at Alumni Field, earning a walk-off 3–2 victory in the opener before settling for a 7–7 tie in game two, which was called due to darkness.
The Mariners (11–12–1, 4–4 GNAC) return to conference play on Saturday, April 11, with a doubleheader against Rivier University. First pitch in the opener is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
Game 1 – Mitchell 3, Plymouth State 2
The Panthers struck first in the third inning, using an RBI single to take a 1–0 lead. Mitchell answered in the fourth, when senior Kaylee Drago (Danbury, Conn.) launched a two-run home run to left field, scoring senior Brooke Clancy (East Haven, Conn.) to give the Mariners a 2–1 advantage.
Plymouth State evened the score in the top of the seventh, capitalizing on a Mitchell error to plate an unearned run and tie the game at 2–2.
The Mariners responded in the bottom half of the inning, as senior Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.) delivered a walk-off RBI single to right field, scoring fellow senior Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.) to seal the victory.
Mitchell finished with eight hits in the contest, with Clancy and DeCicco each recording two hits. Drago drove in a team-high two runs, while DeCicco added the game-winning RBI. Freshman Christina Aneiro (North Branford, Conn.) also collected two hits in the win.
In the circle, DeCicco earned the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits over 7.0 innings while striking out three.
Plymouth State totaled five hits, with Emily Bessette recording the lone RBI. Abbey Nezuch took the loss, allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out nine over 6.2 innings.
Game 2 – Mitchell 7, Plymouth State 7 (7 inn., darkness)
Mitchell jumped on the board in the first inning when junior Zoe Battersby (West Warwick, R.I.) delivered an RBI single to score DeCicco.
Plymouth State responded with three runs in the second to take the lead, but the Mariners answered in the bottom half of the inning. Clancy drove in a pair with a single, and Drago followed with an RBI double to give Mitchell a 4–3 advantage.
The Mariners added three more runs in the fourth behind RBI hits from senior Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.), DeCicco, and Drago to extend the lead to 7–3.
Plymouth State rallied in the seventh, scoring four runs to tie the game at 7–7. The Panthers capitalized on a Mitchell error and strung together timely hits, including a two-run single by Abbey Nezuch, to even the score before the game was called due to darkness.
Mitchell finished with 12 hits in the contest, with Roman and Drago each collecting three. DeCicco and Clancy added two hits apiece, while Drago and Clancy each drove in two runs.
In the circle, freshman Arianna Drouin (Swanzey, N.H.) went the distance, allowing seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits while striking out three.
Plymouth State recorded 11 hits, with Nezuch leading the way with three hits and two RBI.
