Softball Splits with Rivier in Saturday Doubleheader
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader with Rivier University on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field, falling 10–4 in nine innings to open the day before rebounding with an 11–10 victory in the second game.
The Mariners (12-13-1, 5-5 GNAC) will return to their home diamond on Sunday, April 12, when they host the University of Saint Joseph. The team will hold Senior Day prior to the first pitch of the 11:00 a.m. opener.
Game 1 – Rivier 10, Mitchell 4 (9 Innings)
Rivier struck first with a two-run double in the opening inning and added another run in the fourth to build a 3–0 lead. Mitchell responded in the bottom half of the fourth, stringing together three straight RBI doubles from junior Zoe Battersby (West Warwick, R.I.), senior Brooke Clancy (East Haven, Conn.), and freshman Arianna Drouin (Swanzey, N.H.) to even the score at 3–3.
The Raiders regained the lead in the sixth, capitalizing on a Mitchell error to plate an unearned run and take a 4–3 advantage. The Mariners answered again in the seventh, as Battersby delivered an RBI single down the right field line to tie the game at 4–4 and send it to extra innings.
Rivier broke the game open in the ninth, tallying six runs on five hits and taking advantage of defensive miscues to create separation.
Battersby led the Mitchell offense with two hits and two RBI, while Clancy and Drouin each added an RBI. Senior Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.) went the distance in the circle, allowing 10 runs (six earned) on 16 hits while striking out three.
Rivier totaled 16 hits in the contest, led by Emma Politz and Kylee Caetano, who each recorded four hits, while Olivia Couto drove in a game-high three runs.
Game 2 – Mitchell 11, Rivier 10 (8 Innings)
Mitchell struck first in the opening inning, but Rivier answered with a six-run third and added three more in the fourth to build a 9–3 advantage. The Mariners began to claw back in the fifth, as DeCicco launched a two-run home run to cut the deficit to 9–5.
The comeback continued in the sixth, with Battersby delivering a two-run single to bring Mitchell within one. After Rivier added a run in the seventh, the Mariners answered again in the bottom half, as junior Madison Cole (Westbrook, Maine) laced a two-run double to tie the game at 10–10.
Mitchell completed the rally in the eighth, walking it off on an RBI single to left center off the bat of Battersby.
Battersby led the offensive charge with four hits and three RBI, while DeCicco drove in a game-high four runs and added a home run. Cole chipped in two hits and three RBI, and Clancy finished with two hits and an RBI.
In the circle, Drouin went the distance to earn the win, allowing 10 runs (nine earned) on 14 hits while striking out three.
Rivier totaled 14 hits in the contest, with Couto leading the way with three RBI, while Caetano added three hits and an RBI.
