Softball Takes Two in Senior Day Sweep of Blue Jays
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team picked up a critical Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) South Division sweep of the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) on Sunday afternoon, routing the Blue Jays 11–2 in the opener before walking off with a 4–3 victory in eight innings in the nightcap.
The Mariners (14-13-1, 7-5 GNAC) will pause conference play for a non-conference doubleheader at Trinity College on Wednesday, April 15. First pitch in the opener is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
Game 1 – Mitchell 11, USJ 2
After surrendering a run in the opening inning, the Mariners responded immediately, plating three runs in the bottom half of the frame highlighted by a two-run double from senior Kaylee Drago (Danbury, Conn.). Mitchell continued to build momentum with a four-run second inning, taking advantage of Saint Joseph miscues to extend the lead to 7–1.
The Mariners added three more runs in the third and one in the fourth to put the game out of reach, totaling 11 runs on 13 hits in the contest.
Junior Zoe Battersby (West Warwick, R.I.) led the offensive charge with a perfect 3-for-3 performance, scoring three runs and driving in one. Senior Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.) added two hits, including a double, and a game-high three RBI, while Drago finished with three hits, two RBI, and a pair of runs scored. Senior Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.) also crossed the plate four times in the win.
In the circle, DeCicco earned the victory, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits over 5.0 innings while striking out two.
Saint Joseph finished with five hits, with Camille Jones and Kayla Phelps each driving in a run.
Game 2 – Mitchell 4, USJ 3 (8 Innings)
Trailing 3–0 through the first three innings, the Mariners chipped away at the deficit, getting on the board in the fourth on an RBI single from junior Brooke Clancy (East Haven, Conn.). Mitchell added another run in the fifth when Battersby delivered an RBI single to cut the deficit to one.
The Mariners pulled even in the seventh, as DeCicco singled and advanced to second on an error, allowing Battersby to score the tying run.
Mitchell completed the comeback in the bottom of the eighth, when junior Haley Westfal (La Habra, Calif.) lined a walk-off RBI single to right field, scoring pinch runner Tess Frager (Saco, Maine) to seal the victory.
Mitchell totaled 10 hits in the contest, with DeCicco leading the way with three while also adding an RBI and a run scored. Battersby, Clancy, and Westfal each drove in a run, while Camryn Russo (Middletown, Conn.) added two hits.
In the circle, freshman Arianna Drouin (Swanzey, N.H.) earned the win, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits over 8.0 innings while striking out two.
Saint Joseph finished with eight hits, with Gabby Marichal and Avianna Ibrahim each recording an RBI.
