Softball Bested in Pair of Non-Conference Games
HARTFORD, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games on Wednesday afternoon at Trinity College, falling 9–1 in the opener before coming up just short in a 4–3 decision in the second game at the Trinity Softball Field.
The Mariners (14-15-1, 7-5 GNAC) will host Southern Maine Community College for a scrimmage on Thursday, April 16, before returning to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday, April 18, with a doubleheader at Lasell University. First pitch in the opener is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
Game 1 – Trinity 9, Mitchell 1 (6 Innings)
The Bantams broke through in the second inning, plating four runs on three hits and taking advantage of a Mitchell error to seize early control. Trinity added two more runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to pull away.
Mitchell's lone run came in the fourth inning, when junior Madison Cole (Westbrook, Maine) delivered an RBI single to left field to score senior Kaylee Drago (Danbury, Conn.).
The Mariners finished with seven hits in the contest, with junior Zoe Battersby (West Warwick, R.I.) and Cole each recording two.
In the circle, freshman Arianna Drouin (Swanzey, N.H.) took the loss, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on 13 hits over 5.1 innings while striking out two.
Trinity totaled 13 hits on the day, led by Heather Roth, who went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Katie Ruffer added two hits and three RBI.
Game 2 – Trinity 4, Mitchell 3
The Mariners struck early, plating two runs in the first inning on an RBI double from Drago and an RBI single by freshman Camryn Russo (Holbrook, N.Y.) to take a 2–0 lead. Trinity answered in the bottom half of the inning to even the score, but Mitchell regained the advantage in the second when Battersby reached on an error that allowed Cole to score.
The Bantams tied the game in the third and then broke through in the bottom of the seventh, using an RBI single from Makenna True to walk it off.
Mitchell finished with nine hits in the contest, with Russo and freshman Emma Boisseau (East Providence, R.I.) each recording two. Drago, Battersby, and Russo each drove in a run, while Drago and junior Haley Westfal (La Habra, Calif.) each doubled in the loss.
In the circle, senior Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.) went the distance, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out one.
Trinity was led by True, who went 4-for-4 with three RBI, including the game-winning hit.
